One possibility is the brake switch contacts are/were dirty or corroded and you tapped the brake pedal at just the right moment to wipe the copper surface clean. Another possibility is the switch is not adjusted properly.

The switches (there could be two) are attached to the brake pedal mounting bracket under the dash and actuated by the brake pedal arm.
