jim
I have a 1996 DeVille, its been sitting in the garage for about a month. When I started it up today the ABS light stayed on, and when I put the car in gear the traction control light also went on. After all that I also have no turn signals but the hazzards work. I checked the fuses and they are OK. I figured with multiple problems it was a fuse. Does anybody have any other ideas?
BodybyFisher
Call up the DTC codes and post them here, they will help us diagnose your problem. You have an on board diagnostics system that will provide you with any diagnostics codes that are stored by the computer. Go to the top of the page, click HOW TO, DTC Codes, READING CODES, you will get the procedure. You might start by cleaning the battery cables and taking the car on a run to charge up the battery. This could be related to a low battery and bad connection also.. fivepointohman
I am going to say it's just the battery, When the cars battery is low, This Stupid worthless ECM that GM created doesnt fully bootup if you will, and it causes codes, just run the shut it down, restart it and I bet its all clear. It has happened to me as my car sits all winter long. Good luck!
BodybyFisher
This Stupid worthless ECM that GM created I tend to be a little kinder to GM. I have built 500 computers in my lifetime and have always used high performance power supplies with LOTS of headroom from PC POWER AND COOLING, and currently have a 500 watt power supply in my desktop. ANY computer device will faulter without proper power even computers from FORD, CHRYSLER, etc.. This occurred in 1996: A more powerful Powertrain Control Module (PCM) with micro-processors monitored and directed DeVille engine/transmission operations. Clock speed of the PCM microprocessor was increased from 2.1 megahertz to 3.4 megahertz, which improved processing time 63 percent. Memory size was increased from 64 kilobytes to 96 kilobytes. In addition, the PCM was moved from the passenger compartment to the air cleaner housing. This move enhanced engine harness reliability by reducing wiring lengths and minimized the number of wires passed through the front of the dash. If you have an open in the brake lamp circuit you will get ABS and a TCS messages. It the Center High Mount Stop lamp circuit is open you will get the ABS & TCS messages. Depending on the cars wiring it may just be a turn signal or hazard switch problem. I don't have a 96 book with me. 12.58 second Northstar with a GM/Cadillac PCM Cadillac Technician @ Crest Cadillac Brookfield WI Hometown Washougal WA

jim
I checked ground wire at EBTCM and voltage at fuses I did not lift the lock lever and remove the wiring harness from it because I coudn't really reach it well and was afraid to disturb it. Also wile the fuses are ok for the turn signals and ABS the was no voltage there.
jim
Is there any way to clear the codes? Then maybe drive the car and look for new codes. Because I checked codes friday night, and there were 5 codes set. Then after disconnecting the battery cables and cleaning them, and charging the battery I had 9 codes. I just wish I could get the turn signals working so I could drive the car some.
Texas Jim
I just wish I could get the turn signals working so I could drive the car some. Don't know where you are located, but come on down to the Dallas area and drive it all you want to. Almost NOBODY uses turn signals here.
jim
Not as laid back in the Cleveland (Ohio) area. Everyone is in a big rush, and right on your tail, if you stop to turn without a signal you will get plenty of horn and a one finger salute! jim
I'm still dead in the water on this ABS, Traction control problem. Anybody have the service manual schematic of this system, and maybe a trouble tree on how to diagnose this thing? Thanks

Thanks Vern for your reply. I looked at those posts and I checked for corrosion on the Battery 3 fuse, not bad but I cleaned it with a brass brush. I have 12 volts at that fuse but Zero voltage at my ABS fuse under the hood and zero voltage at my turn signal fuse in the trunk. Also when I use the heater buttons to get codes it says no TCS data. It had 12v at the fuse but I have 0v at the abs fuse and the turn signal fuse. I need more pics of the fuse block and wire routing.
vdwarren
Jim, it sounds you are on the first check for your problem. Jim I have a FSM, but really not computor savey. I am hoping that the supportors will read this and furnish some print outs for you. In that group of messages (96SLS EBCM )and reply's, jacobz furnished wire diagrams that helped me, so research those as much as you can for that info. Also, when and if, the time comes to replace the EBCM, I would avoid the Dealers, the prices are unreal. I am happy with the route that I ended up taking. Let me know how you are doing, if it comes to replace< I will furnish you with the information of the company to rebuild that modual, with upgrades in the electronics. I know how you feel at this point, but stick with it, with the help of the group you will get it corrected.

vdwarren
Jim, wondering around on this web, found what you are looking for, (easier to find). On the first page of Caddyinfo.com, go down the page to: CADS FOR SALE - Sup. by Vendors. Go over and bring up "jcobz28" then bring up " POSTS" this will bring you into the subject that you want. scroll down to about Dec 25. 07 and go from there, pretty lengthy, but will make things easier, there is also a diagnostic tree for the EBTCM. Again good luck
