wengr
Hello, my 98 4.6l deville pings with any brand and any octane rating. happens to varying degrees in all driving situations. currently has 70k mi. A search of the old archives shows much info about the 4.9 but I found nothing about the 4.6. How can I troubleshoot this? the car is becoming undriveable. Thanks in advance, Greg
Ranger
The Northstar has knock sensors that detect the knock (ping) before you hear it and retard the spark to eliminate it. You should be able to run any grade of fuel. I run 87 and have no problems. My guess would be first check for any stored codes. If there are none, check the knock sensors. I am not sure if they will set a code if inoperative but I would think so. Also maybe clean the EGR valve. I'm sure Bill will have much more input.
