daniel812
I am having problems locating a noise in the right rear of my 98 sls. It occurs only over bumps which sent me in the direction of suspension. They can be very small bumps/potholes and I hear a rattle sound only from the right rear, and need advice figuring this out. I recently for regular maintenance replaced all struts and mounts. The noise was there before and is still around now. From under the car I can not see anything loose or worn. It is as if something is bumping around (for example the noise you hear when your spare tire is loose) I hear this noise when going slow 2-3 mph and upto about 40 mph. Advice is appreciated - car drives great and its just a minor annoyance
Ranger
Rear knuckle bushings? I think BBF just went through this if I remember correctly. He'll pipe in.
adallak
To eliminate brake pads hitting the caliper, press the brake pedal slightly while approaching the next bump. See if noise is gone with pads engaging the rotor. The saddest thing in life is wasted talent
BodybyFisher
You have to get your nose in there and look. I had a bad strut/shock and bad knuckle bushings, but there is a hub bearing in there also that can be bad not to mention your strut rod links and bushings. You need to inspect it, its hard to diagnose here. You are getting a noise AND you are getting shifting (when you say 'send me into the direction of the suspension"). Look at the knuckle bushings closely Here is my thread when I replaced the rear knuckle so you can see the area http://caddyinfo.ipbhost.com/index.php?sho...hl=rear+knuckle Here is a discussion we had on developing an aftermarket rear knuckle solution http://caddyinfo.ipbhost.com/index.php?sho...hl=rear+knuckle Pre-1995 - DTC codes OBD1 >> 1996 and newer - DTC codes OBD2 >> https://www.obd-codes.com/trouble_codes/gm/obd_codes.htm How to check for codes Caddyinfo How To Technical Archive >> http://www.caddyinfo.com/wordpress/cadillac-how-to-faq/ Cadillac History & Specifications Year by Year http://www.motorera.com/cadillac/index.htm
daniel812
I am not getting any "shifting" - just noise over bumps. If something was loose I dont think I would hear it at 2-3 mph, which makes me think something is worn out - slight movements of the right rear wheel make the noise. Brake pads and rotors were installed within the last 5k miles (noise was before and is still there)
BodybyFisher
Explain what you mean by this statement then It occurs only over bumps which sent me in the direction of suspension The knuckle bushings wear Pre-1995 - DTC codes OBD1 >> 1996 and newer - DTC codes OBD2 >> https://www.obd-codes.com/trouble_codes/gm/obd_codes.htm How to check for codes Caddyinfo How To Technical Archive >> http://www.caddyinfo.com/wordpress/cadillac-how-to-faq/ Cadillac History & Specifications Year by Year http://www.motorera.com/cadillac/index.htm
daniel812
Sorry about that - What I mean is the noise sounds like it is coming from that area.
BodybyFisher
Jack it up and feel the wheel at 3 and 9 oclock and 12 and 6 for ANY play. If you have ANY play, look for the source. Look at your stabilizer bar LINKS and BUSHINGS Look at the shock for oil leakage If you take the wheel off, look for wear in the knuckle bushings, see the links I provided above for pics of the knuckle, Mike Pre-1995 - DTC codes OBD1 >> 1996 and newer - DTC codes OBD2 >> https://www.obd-codes.com/trouble_codes/gm/obd_codes.htm How to check for codes Caddyinfo How To Technical Archive >> http://www.caddyinfo.com/wordpress/cadillac-how-to-faq/ Cadillac History & Specifications Year by Year http://www.motorera.com/cadillac/index.htm
daniel812
I have no leaks from the shocks and no play in either rear wheel. Bushings still look ok (although 10 years old) I have let the problem be for a few months and it is not getting worse, but its still there and it bothers me. BodybyFisher
This is probably your rear knuckle or a bad strut. I have a bad knuckle and it gives me noise over bumps. Do a little diagnosis by pulling your rear strut out and seeing if it has dampening in both directions, my strut did not have any dampening.. OR OIL LEAKING. Regis
While the car is parked and turned off, try pushing down on the rear bumper (at the corners). Do you hear a clicking or a pinging sound? If not then go to each rear wheel well and gently pull up. Do you hear any sounds? A rear knuckle bushing can't be seen without removing the knuckle and pressing the bushing out. So it can be a challenge to figure out if it's worn sometimes. It could also be a worn bushing on either or both the upper and lower control arm. However, like Ranger and BodybyFisher, I tend to think it's one of your rear knuckles going or gone bad. JimD
A gentle reminder here folks; the Seville chassis had a major redesign for the 1998 - 2004 models. As in major! Jim Drive your car. Use your cell phone. CHOOSE ONE !
BodybyFisher
A gentle reminder here folks; the Seville chassis had a major redesign for the 1998 - 2004 models. As in major! That is true Jim, I assumed that it had the same rear knuckle as I have, I know that I picked up a knuckle from a 99 at some point. Do you have a scan of the rear suspension on this car? JimD
....Do you have a scan of the rear suspension on this car? Unfortunately, no. I have a 1998 Seville Service Manual and a decent scanner, but they are in different locations. Jim Drive your car. Use your cell phone. CHOOSE ONE ! winterset
Can it be the exhaust / muffler rattling around & hitting something? - have someong wiggle the exhaust & see if you hear a noise in the cabin.
