stu_pidasso
Does anyone have tips replacing O2 sensors for 2000 Northstar eng? I am talking about the ones in the eng. compartment. I have heard to get the car nice and warm first. Does anyone know if I need the special socket for this or just a wrench? Any tips would be helpful...thanks. Ranger
Yes, you need a special socket. It is basically just a deep well socket with s slot cut down the side for the wire. Getting the exhaust warm first should aid in removal if you have any problems with it.
Poobah
The original O2 sensors put in 2000 to about 2002 Northstars were prone to fail. Cadillac has redesigned them twice. The latest design should be quite reliable. Also, I've been told that the computer doesn't always correctly diagnose which one is acting up. For these reasons, it's a good idea to replace both of them while you are at it. Happiness is owning a Cadillac with no codes.
Ranger
Poobah, are you thinking of the CKP sensors?
jasper60103
If you buy the O2 sensors from Autozone, they will loan the special socket wrench to you for free. I just replaced the O2 sensor in my Olds.

BodybyFisher
Personally, I would buy the O2 Sensor Socket and throw it in your tool box. See this one at Sears for $12. Jobs to me are excuses to buy tools, when you do it yourself, you are saving a ton on diagnosis and labor, why not Sears O2 Sensor Socket Pre-1995 - DTC codes OBD1 >> 1996 and newer - DTC codes OBD2 >> https://www.obd-codes.com/trouble_codes/gm/obd_codes.htm How to check for codes Caddyinfo How To Technical Archive >> http://www.caddyinfo.com/wordpress/cadillac-how-to-faq/ Cadillac History & Specifications Year by Year http://www.motorera.com/cadillac/index.htm
Ranger
Stick with an A/C Delco sensor.
Norman L.
This is probably a stupid question but what is a 02 sensor and what does it do? How would a person know if one is bad? I have a very slight hesitation in my 2001 Deville when it shifts from first into second. I took it to a mechanic months ago and he said there were no codes present. BodybyFisher
Try cleaning the throttle body, check the air filter, use premium and see what happens. As for the O2 sensors, go to this page and scroll down to Oxygen Sensors there is a lot of info there http://www.autotap.com/technical_library.asp Pre-1995 - DTC codes OBD1 >> 1996 and newer - DTC codes OBD2 >> https://www.obd-codes.com/trouble_codes/gm/obd_codes.htm How to check for codes Caddyinfo How To Technical Archive >> http://www.caddyinfo.com/wordpress/cadillac-how-to-faq/ Cadillac History & Specifications Year by Year http://www.motorera.com/cadillac/index.htm

It will trip the SES light and when you pull the DTC's, there will be one for an O2 sensor.
