ghoratio
Hey All,new to the forum.I recently brought my car to a local mech, for a head gasket,he qouted me 2,200.From everything ive read it seemed like a reasonable price. He calls me 2 days later I go there and he shows me a large crack in the block.I decided to replace the engine with a used engine with 75000 miles for .I got the car back and it runs great except the temp seems to be running hotter than the old engine.i dont know exact temp ,no numbers on the gauge,I would guess about 215-230.the mech tells me that it is normal operating temp.Is this right?seems too hot . JimD
Your temperatures are technically not too hot for the engine. But they are a little too hot for the driver. Is the temp. steady at 235 or does it swing between 220 and 235 back and forth? With the engine at idle, A/C OFF, hood open, can you see the fans cycling ON and OFF (you will have to look, you can't hear them). If the temp. gauge is moving back and forth and you can see the fans cycling ON and OFF, you are golden! There is nothing wrong with the temps. you are seeing. If it was mine....I would toss a new OEM thermostat in there just because. At the same time paying attention to the water pump drive belt condition and operation of the tensioner pulley. You did not report any loss of coolant which tells me there is nothing serious going on here. You just inherited someone's old thermostat. I would be curious how the temp. guage behaves at 55 MPH; I bet it settles down at the 12:00 o'clock position. Jim Drive your car. Use your cell phone. CHOOSE ONE ! Jason15036
I have a 2000 STS and my tempature runs constantly at 235. It seems hot, but it stays right there all the time.

The temp gauge does swing from 220-235 with both fans operating, the water pump drive belt seems to be ok,I did not see any coolant leak,I did see a small amount of steam coming from around the reservoir . Driving around 55 to 60 the temp ran a steady 230.
bc6t
I have a 1998 STS as well - just replaced thermostat and water pump. Both before the repair and after the needle stabilizes and stays at 12:00 o'clock - sometimes it dips a hair below, but it never has passed the 12:00 o'clock position (don't really know the temp). I would just change the thermostat - it's an easy change and not very expensive (don't forget to get a new thermostat gasket too). Ranger
I did see a small amount of steam coming from around the reservoir They have been known to crack. Check it closely. Sometimes the crack will be on the bottom and thus hard to locate. Dried Dex will leave a whitish telltale residue.
