01 sts trans shifting hard

Do not let them flush the transmission; flushing is for commodes.

A simply drain and refill is all that is necessary.

P0716 - Input Speed Sensor Circuit Intermittent

Since this is an intermittent problem, I would be checking for a loose or corroded 20 pin connector. The (round) connector usually sits near the top of the transaxle case under the coolant crossover area. It should be visible from over the left front fender under all the air intake plumbing.

i checked the connector,it seems to be ok.any other ideas?it dosent seem to act up until the trans builds pressure, after about 10 minutes of driving.you think it could be the iss? if so is it hurting the trans to drive it like this?also any suggestions on a trans shop in the south jersey area,i was gonna take it to the caddy dlr but they charge $97 an hr labor.

Its not that it is building up pressure, when you have the ISS speed sensor problem, the PCM utilizes the VSS and defaults to a default LINE PRESSURE. That is what JimD was saying above, when he said "I't possible the transmission has commanded to the highest line pressure by a trouble code". I was having a P0717 ISS Speed Sensor problem and replaced mine in August. You seem to be having an intermittant problem. My code would go away and come back intermittantly similar to yours.

I will post a photo of the plug. You must take it apart and look for tranny fluid that had leaked into it, fluid can leach into it from the tranny and run down into the plug. If you have tranny fluid in the plug clean the plug with electrical contact cleaner. Disconnect the battery before you do that. I will post a photo tomorrow, I am having a slow wireless connection for some reason. But here is my ISS Speed Sensor thread, you will see lots of photos in there that will help. Its a big job to do yourself, if you need to change the sensor, its in the side pan. Mike

See this thread for more Input Speed Sensor information. Your code is intermittant, that is what lead JimD to point you to the connector. Your P0716, is intermittant, my code P0717 is Input Speed Sensor Circuit Low Input, and it was related to the sensor itself being out of range in terms of resistance. I need to send it to JimD for an autopsy.

thanks for the info mike.so since its not a po717 code, the problem may be in the harness between the plug and the computer right?

Well scotty, that is an optimistic guess on our part and the easiest thing to look at. It certainly could be a bad ISS sensor that instead of being out of its resistance range like mine did, instead is going OFF and losing it's connection entirely. The sensor is an induction device, that is probably a coil of wire wrapped around a magnet, that creates a voltage as the drum's metal teeth travel by it, if that coil of wire is broken, you could get an intermittant and the sensor needs replacing. Keep your fingers crossed that your connector is soaked with fluid, loose, corroded, etc. If you could get to the plug, you could test the resistance of the wiring and sensor, we will cross that bridge when you are ready to.

I will say this, I have seen a few members and friends get the ISS sensor replaced for about $500, the mechanics drop the drivers side of the carriage to gain clearance to the side pan, and swap out the sensor, similar to what I did on the ground. My job took a month because I did 3 or 4 different jobs at the same time. The dealer wanted $1600 to do mine. I also replaced my TSS and Pressure solenoids.
