Navigation update for european navigation systems

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone.

As you may remember we have a problem here in Europe with the DVD-based systems. To use a map from 2007 and newer we'll need "a service update cd" to update the navigation system. Weephee made me a copy of the CD that you use "over there" and after reading the fine print I decided not to use it since my radio number wasn't among the supported numbers. I believe that this is due to differences in TV-systems, AM/FM channel tuning, file format and dtructure of the maps etc. (Thanks again Weephee)

Anyway I refuse to belive that there is no CD to do the same thing here in Europe. I mean if I look at the back of the DVD-case for my 2007 map it says "For vehicles bulit prior to 2007, a service CD update may be required to use this DVD map disc. If the address destination entry no longer functions with this map disc, please see your dealership for the service update"

Why would anyone write something like that if it does not exist, right?

I was making this a separate post instead of continuing this topic in "STS going to repair shop for a couple of isues"

Send me your VIN and I will look into your configuration.

Why are you updating?

Hi AJ.

I figured I needed the update since almost all of the commands are inoperable with the newer map DVD. All menues are selectable but nothing happends. The map picture is loading, I can zoom, rotate pan etc, but it takes forever and I can hear the player trying to read from the disc (sounds like a stuck cd-player i.e it spins up repeatingly). When I switch back to the old map DVD everything works perfect. The DVD itself is in mint condition, no scratches or stains. Can get my PC to read from it (or at least the file info on it without problem.

I did notice that there are a new icons on the map (ikons for parks, industries etc)

Seems like an update is required, can't think of something else.

Navigation System Components

The navigation system contains the following components:

  • The navigation radio
  • The global positioning system (GPS) antenna

The export navigation system (w/U3S, U3Q) contains the following additional components:

  • The vehicle information communication system (VICS) microprocessor card (w/U3Q)
  • The VICS optical/microwave beacon antenna (w/U3Q)
  • The 4 TV antennae integrated into the rear window glass (w/U3S)
  • The VICS FM antenna integrated into the rear glass (w/U3Q)
  • The TV antenna module to control antenna selection (w/U3S)
  • The 2 TV antenna amplifiers (w/U3S) DeVille only
  • The auxiliary RCA video jacks (w/U3S)

Navigation Radio

This component acts as the operator interface for the navigation system, provides the data input from the operator to the navigation system and provides navigation information to the operator via the display screen. The navigation radio is located in the center of the instrument panel. The navigation radio provides the following:

  • A display screen. All navigation, audio and TV functions are displayed on this screen.
  • Soft key buttons on the display to allow selection from menus and to operate the navigation system, the audio system and the export TV system.
  • The navigation system map with routing information displayed on the navigation radio screen.
  • The navigation system map with routing information displayed on the navigation radio screen.
  • Provides verbal guidance to the operator.

Global Positioning System (GPS) Antenna

The GPS antenna is attached to the bottom of the rear shelf and can be accessed through the rear compartment. The GPS antenna is powered through the same coaxial cable used to send the signals to the NAV.

TV and VICS Antenna -- Export, w/U3S, U3Q

These several antennae are conductive traces placed on the inside of the rear window glass.

TV Antenna Module -- Export, w/U3S, U3Q

The TV antenna module is located behind the trim on the right rear side of the passenger compartment. The TV antenna module is used by the navigation radio to automatically select the antenna combination that provides the strongest TV signal to the navigation radio. The TV antenna module also provides the VICS FM signal to the VICS card (export, w/UE9).

TV Antenna Amplifiers -- Export, w/U3S

The TV antenna amplifiers are mounted behind the trim on each side of the rear window. The TV antenna amplifiers are powered by the TV antenna module through the same coaxial cable used to carry their signals to the TV antenna module. They are attached to two of the four TV antenna trace patterns in the rear window glass.

Auxiliary RCA Video Jacks -- Export, w/U3S

The auxiliary RCA video jacks, used to attach a remote video device, are located at the rear of the center console. These connections may be used to provide audio and video input from a video player or camera to the navigation radio.

VICS Module -- Export, w/U3Q

The vehicle information communication system (VICS) card, an export only dealer-installed option, is installed inside the navigation radio. The VICS card uses signals from the optical/microwave beacon antenna and the rear glass VICS antenna via the TV antenna module to convey routing information to the NAV. The NAV either revises planned routing or relays the VICS information to the operator through the screen of the navigation radio and the voice guidance system.

VICS Optical/Microwave Beacon Antenna -- Export, w/U3Q

The vehicle information communication system (VICS) optical/microwave beacon antenna (export, w/UE9) is a dealer-installed option. The antenna, which is mounted on the right side of the instrument panel, picks up signals through the front window glass. A coaxial cable carries the power to and signals from this antenna to the navigation radio.

Audio System Interface

The navigation radio controls the audio system by sending key-pressed messages to the remote radio and displaying audio information

Is this what you have?

The export navigation system (w/U3S, U3Q) contains the following additional components:

  • The vehicle information communication system (VICS) microprocessor card (w/U3Q)
  • The VICS optical/microwave beacon antenna (w/U3Q)

#01-08-126-001: Information Regarding On-Board Navigational Systems - (Nov 20, 2001)

Subject: Information Regarding On-Board Navigational Systems

Models: 2000-2002 Cadillac DeVille, Seville

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Introduction

During the course of the last few years, great strides have been achieved relative to the usage of innovative technology within the automotive industry. An example of this technology is the availability of navigational systems to assist customers in their ownership experience. The intent of this bulletin is to provide information on the above mentioned Cadillac models relative to navigation system capabilities, characteristics and service/customer support.

General Information

2000-2001 Model Years (USA only)

Beginning with the 2000 MY, the Cadillac DeVille and Seville models sold in the USA were offered with an optional On-Board Navigation System (RPO UY4). The same system (with updated map coverage) was also available for the 2001 MY. The main components of this system are as follows:

• Global Positioning System (GPS) antenna -- under rear package shelf

• Navigation Electronic Control Unit (ECU) -- mounted in trunk

• Navigation Radio Controller (NRC) -- mounted in trunk

• Navigation Display -- center console

This system requires the usage of nine compact discs (CDs). These CDs are labeled for specific regions of the contiguous 48 states of the domestic North American market. Please note that for 2000-2001 model year vehicles, all nine CDs were shipped in a leather binder to the ordering dealership when the vehicle's invoice was generated. As such, the leather packet would arrive at the dealership prior to the actual vehicle (usually, within a 10 day to two week time frame). As part of this shipping process, dealerships were required to place the leather binder in a safe environment until the vehicle was prepped and delivered to the customer.

Customers who wish to obtain replacement CDs, in the event any of the original items become lost or damaged, may do so through your parts department. Below is the list of part numbers you may use to place an order through GMSPO.

• For the 2001 model year, a geographical map of the coverage area is also stamped on each respective disc.

2002 Model Year (USA and Canada)

For the 2002 MY, the Cadillac DeVille and Seville models sold in the USA and Canada, are offered with an optional Advance Navigation System (RPO U3R). System features include the following:

• The AVN system has combined the three modules used on the 2000-2001 models into a single unit - the Navigation ECU.

• A single DVD-based map coverage for the continental United States and Canada. Multiple usage of CD-based map coverage has been eliminated.

• GPS-based

• 6.5 in (165 mm) touch screen

• Voice or text guidance (English, French, German, Spanish, or Italian)

• DVD video capability (operated only when the vehicle is in the PARK position)

• Voice recognition (English only)

Please note that for the 2002 model year vehicles, the navigational DVD is placed within the vehicle during assembly and is shipped with the vehicle.

Customers who wish to obtain a replacement DVD, in the event the original item becomes lost or damaged, may do so through your parts department. When ordering, please specify P/N 25737698.

Mapping Information

The mapping information contained on the discs covers all interstate freeways/Trans--Canada highways and most of the state/provincial highways, country roads, major and general streets. The reality being that the network of roads are always in a constant state of change, the level of mapping detail can vary from region to region, state to state or province to province and even from disc to disc and year to year. As such, it should be expected by all users that the level of updated mapping information will increase over time. Mapping information has been separated into two distinct categories. These categories are known as DETAILED and NON-DETAILED coverage areas. The definition of each category is described below:

Detailed Area

This category contains the highest level of map detail available (literally "door to door") while a customer is driving from their original location to their destination site. A detailed area will include all of the highways, service and residential roads in the map database. Road attributes including street names, address directionality (for example, one way streets), turn restrictions, etc., are contained in this category. Also included in this category is a list of Points of Interest (POI) such as restaurants, airports, banks, city centers, hospitals, parking garages, police stations, gas stations, schools, historical monuments, tourist attractions, etc.

Non-Detailed Area

This is a basic category containing most of the major road network only. The category does not provide "door to door" guidance. Residential roads, service roads, Points of Interest (except city centers) and street addresses are not included in this category. This category is equal to the amount of road information that can generally be observed in AAA state or provincial maps.

To assist Cadillac customers in determining the level of mapping coverage they will be able to obtain while traveling, the Navigation System Map Disc Coverage booklet lists (by county/city), those areas categorized as Detailed areas. Those counties/cities not listed are categorized as Non-Detailed areas.

As previously mentioned, since the network of roads is constantly changing, it is strongly recommended that customers access Cadillac's website (www.cadillac.com). The website will provide the most information regarding mapping availability specific to the USA market.

Should a customer wish to upgrade their CDs/DVD to a more recent version, they may do so at their expense. It should not be submitted as a warranty claim. This is the same philosophy that is encountered with software for personal computers in the home.

System Characteristics

• The 2002 AVN system utilizes voice recognition capabilities in English language. This allows the user to provide voice commands to the system that previously required the use of either a hard or soft key input.

• With voice recognition, regional accent characteristics may have an impact on the system's performance.

• For AVN, the single DVD is loaded by tilting the screen forward. This allows the loading to take place inside the vehicle vs. opening the trunk to load the respective CD as was done in the previous NAV system.

• Since the system has a DVD reader, users can also watch DVD movies in the vehicle. The gear selector must be in the PARK position in order to view DVD movies.

• The GPS indicator for the AVN system is opposite of the prior NAV system. For NAV, if the system was receiving an adequate GPS signal, the GPS logo would appear on the screen. The AVN system only displays a GPS logo if the signal IS NOT RECEIVED.

• Since the radio is incorporated into a single navigation unit, the Theftlock® feature used for the radios is also used for AVN.

• The AVN screen has 2D and 3D capability. The NAV system only had 2D capability.

Additional Sources of Information

You may wish to suggest to any interested party to visit the Cadillac website (www.cadillac.com) for additional information, specific to the USA market.
