MIke D
Long story short, Bought my car on Ebay last year. That was a good thing. However this is the first winter on the road in the north, She does not like the cold. I drive to boston to change out the starter. It turns over fine but did not "retract" after starting. No problem. Need to be cleaned and re-greased. Well on the way up the radiator blows, Cracks the end tank about 2 inches long. We change that out with "relative" ease. Pull the starter and that do what we need to do.... get it all back together. Item #1 & 2 fixed in a day... Item #3... when it's a cold rain , my trunk is an ocean. It's been an ongoing fix but now we suspect the rubber gasket around the rear window. Find a few places that look bad and we seal them up. Not sure if it's fixed because it is not cold out.... Item #4... FPR, Sometimes it has issues with holding FP after a long sit. Tried the whole key on, key off, key back on and crank. Usually this works but I like it to work on the first try.... Inexpensive part and we are pulling the intake anyways, so we do it. Here is where the "fun" Starts... I am now back in Jersey and it is cold outside. It didn't rain and my Crappy apartment complex does not let you wash cars here. AKA no hose to use.... so I don't know if it's fixed. I decide to drive my lady over to work and go to the carwash. Turn the key on. Wait for the 3 chimes and crank... and crank.... and crank... NO Fuel! key off, key on, key off, key on, figure it's good and primed... Crank and crank and cough and stumble and HEREITGOES!!!!!!!! My lady looks at me (probably thinking "sure you WORKED on your car") and says I love your "expensive" car. (she drives a beat up 97 subaru that goes through 2 feet of snow and never breaks.) Now that it's running it tells me that the passenger door is ajar. I close all 4 and the message stays on... But no interior lights on.... that's wierd! I also get an air bag light on the dash... It was a quiet ride to work! I get home and run the codes... all were cleared after the maint yesterday was done. History C1282 - Yaw Rate Sensor Bias Circuit Malfunction - May have been the loud Radio.. It's my "hey your music is too loud" warning. (side note... I'm not one of those guys doing this at 4am through a neighborhood trying to show off or piss off the world. It's windows closed, sunroof closed, flying down the highway.. and no RAP! Rap is mindless in my OPINION...) So here is my question. Why would a "cold" fpr not want to start when it started great yesterday when it was warm? Why would I be getting an Air Bag message when it's "cold out" too? 3rd time for air bag light... but only when it's cold... Thanks for letting me vent, any comments, questions, and help??? Mike D For letting you VENT?, did we have a choice? j/k UMM, I doubt that is what is happening, it is unlikely that your "aftermarket sub in the trunk. sometimes when the music "hits" hard it kicks on the ABS light on the dash". Keep in mind that when you have the woofer kicking it is DRAWING heavily from your electrical system and THAT is the reason your ABS light is on, you are sucking too much current. You should probably put a LINE STABILIZING CAP or heavy duty alternator in... Check your FUEL PRESSURE with a gage with the ENGINE COLD first with the key off, then with the key on, watch the gage when you turn it on, it should pressurize to 35 to 40 PSI, quickly. This cold start could be a bad fuel pump relay and the fuel pump is starting via the secondary oil pump pressure switch. MIke D
We did have the relay out the other day when doing the work... I'll make sure it was installed and seated. I will also go find a fuel pressure gage. Unfortunatly the majority of the tools are in my dad's shop. If I win the lotto I wont go buy a big hose. I will go buy a big shop full of tools... thanks... KHE
Cars are brought north from down south all the time. The idea that a car "likes" a particular climate or once it has been in one climate, it will not adjust to a different climate is ludicrous - an urban legend. Cars are designed to perform in ALL climates where they will be in use. You have a car that is pushing nine years old - there are bound to be some issues that need to be worked out. There are things that may wear out faster in a southern climate such as the paint, dash, window seals, etc. but they can be repaired. You bought a USED car - that's why you probably got it for a good price. Did you run a VIN check on the car before you bought it to make sure it was not a flood damaged car? Follow the advice on this forum and we'll help you resolve the issues one by one and get your car in proper working order. For what it's worth, my STS came from North Carolina two years ago and has adjusted to Michigan weather just fine... winterset
Trunk leak is a common problem. surprised it wasn't fixed by the previous owner. I know this has been doscussed on this board. - has nothing to do with the windshield. I believe you'll have to remove the trunk seal, silicone it, & re-install the same trunk seal. I know this has been doscussed on this board. - has nothing to do with the windshield. I believe you'll have to remove the trunk seal, silicone it, & re-install the same trunk seal. I had researched it here. Tried that, and it did not fix the problem. The problem was that the rear window seal was torn away from the window itself. This was allowing water to get around it at the bottom right corner.... But thanks for the help. Like heat brings out other problem. Every spring/summer people complaining that their a/c does not work or the car overheats. Durring the winter it is the "my car wont start or heat only works on the floor and not the defroster..." Did you run a VIN check on the car before you bought it to make sure it was not a flood damaged car? Yes, My dad has an active carfax account and has many ties with GM. It was not a flood car and visual inspection confirms it. He did run it into maybe a ditch at one point, but that was never run through his insurance company or through the dealer so it came up clean... just minor damage. The reason the car was so cheap was the dealer told him that the power stearing had to be replaced because it was leaking. And that he "should not drive it one mile before he gets it fixed"... Turns out a fitting was lose on the power stearing line. My dad fixed it on his back when we bought it and drove it from tampa to boston without using a drop of fluid. MIke D
Fixed the "Current B1141 - Driver Pretensioner Loop Resistance High- Has to do with airbag?" It was either the lose wire in the bundle under the seat or the lose plastic housing around the shoulder strap... but no more Air Bag light... Also the open door message went away on it's own. Two down and one to go... Actually, now that it's 54 Deg out (middle of January too) the car starts up just fine. She cranks over two times and purrs like a kitten. It's supposed to be back in the 30's tonight so I will see tomorrow morning.... Thanks again for all your help.. Mike, I harped on this feature a few months back and was correctly hammered on this forum by someone who pointed out the oil pressure switch backup circuitry for the fuel pump had at some point been eliminated. For example, my 1995 had it, whereas my 1998 does not. Since I made such a big stink about it, it's only fitting that I should be the one to correct it. Nothing on you . . . just an FYI for the "family" here. Regards, Warren There is no means of avoiding the final collapse of a boom brought about by credit expansion. Mike D Mike, the FPR does not hold the fuel pressure, it is a valve near the tank that does that and it is perfectly normal for an older high mileage car.
