Heater Blower Motor

Recommended Posts

98 Eldorado ETC, 98k since the summer my blower motor would be running and just shut off, maybe 30 seconds later it would come back on, this was with the A/C and heat both. Pretty consistant but always came back on rather quickly. Now thats it's 20 degrees, the problem has got worse, i.e. just goes off and will not come back on, shut the car off and on start up, sometimes the blower works and goes off, sometimes just won't go on. Sounds like the blower works but a relay of some type or short ? any ideas ? The car is really starting to have issues like every month now :o

Check the connection at the plug on the blower. Wiggle it and see if you can get the blower to go on or off. If that is clean and tight, then the blower is on it's way out.

Since that worked temporarily, you might get lucky and it might be just a bent pin. If the connector looks burnt, then I would guess that the blower is on its way out.

flatback2,

These blower motor control relays can be affected by spark plug wires that get mis-routed from their original position, (like form a fuel rail recall in one instance).

You might check that the plug wires are correctly routed and no other accessory wires have been added across the blower.

Good luck, :)

Add power to leave problems behind. Most braking is just - poor planning.

I dont know if this will help any, but I had a similar problem with my 94 sls. Took it to mech, paid 300 for a new motor, worked ok for about 2 days, then problem came back. Mech said he was out of ideas, and refered me to another mech. This guy looked at it about a minuit while drinking a cup of java, called a junkyard and asked if they had a plug wire for that model. I picked it up for 2 bucks, Mech spliced it in for 10 bucks. No problems since. Old motor was still good, first mech would not replace new one with old. Arguing he did not fix problem did no good. After they have your money they dont like to give it back. Decided if he did replace new with old, no telling what he would screw up on purpose. Old plug look like it had been hot and insulation had melted to some degree. Anyway something to look at. You live and learn.....sometimes.

If the electrical connections are OK to the blower motor, then it is likely the blower motor speed control module is beginning to fail. The module is integrated into the blower motor assembly. My '97 STS blower motor began to operate intermittently and eventually failed. See this thread. If you have the first generation blower motor, you will need to purchase the heat shield separately for the new blower.

The connections look good, no burnt areas and the pins look fine. No spark plug wires crossing the wire (they look like original wires in the same harness). The only wire crossing is the wire leading up to the A/C pressure switch but it's not touching. I have no idea what I did different yesterday, I just reseated the plug. The mechanic will try to troubleshoot the electrics tomorrow, I'll let you know.

Is there any definitive way to make sure it is the blower motor, I don't want to get caught up buying a motor I don't need.

mechanic said it is the blower, said the electrics were burn up inside, just my luck always the most expensive fix, thanks for the ideas

How did he determine that it was burned up inside? Did it fail, filling the car with the stench of burned electronics or is he just guessing?
