txlizerd
I have a leak behind the starter on a 93 4.9-- just would like to know that there would be a freeze plug there, and the way to replace if so.can anyone help?

Ranger
Head bolt? I was going to say the threads pulled and you are in for a head gasket job, but then I realized this is a 4.9 and they are not known for head gasket failures. Are you sure it is leaking form the head bolt?

There is a heater pipe/hose connection behind the starter (actually closer to AC compressor) on 4.9 liter. Check out the clamp. The pipes are known to rust as well. BodybyFisher
on the outside of the block around a head bolt is leaking, anybody think just tighting would help? I was thinking this might be the case last night when I saw your first post, we rarely see freeze out plug problems. We did see a 4.9 corrode through once (Matt from NJ) and he needed to replace his engine. Have you been using the cooling supplement tablets?, if you read your shock tower there is usually a statement about using them. has the coolant been changed every two years do you know? txlizerd
Are the head bolts on the outside of the block? I have changed the coolant twice since i've had the car and always use tabs.
Ranger
The head bolts are under the valve cover.
BodybyFisher
There are a couple of heater pipes that traverse the engine on a 4.9, look closely, we have seen the heater pipes rust out and leak Pre-1995 - DTC codes OBD1 >> 1996 and newer - DTC codes OBD2 >> https://www.obd-codes.com/trouble_codes/gm/obd_codes.htm How to check for codes Caddyinfo How To Technical Archive >> http://www.caddyinfo.com/wordpress/cadillac-how-to-faq/ Cadillac History & Specifications Year by Year http://www.motorera.com/cadillac/index.htm
txlizerd
this looks just like a bolt running vertical behind starter on the front side of the motor, maybe 5/8 dia. though i can't see a the head or threads .How big are the heater pipes? txlizerd
these are head bolts that are beside the spark plugs, on the outside of the block
BodybyFisher
I see the bolts you are talking about, and they do in fact look like head bolts, look at the bolts above the starter slightly below the line of the spark plug holes.. BUT, it is too hard for me to believe that you COULD leak water past a bolt that is probably torqued to somewhere in the range of 80 to 100 ft lbs. It is more likely leaking from above and running. The intake manifold gaskets have been known to leak at the corners, look at the intake manifold, Mike Pre-1995 - DTC codes OBD1 >> 1996 and newer - DTC codes OBD2 >> https://www.obd-codes.com/trouble_codes/gm/obd_codes.htm How to check for codes Caddyinfo How To Technical Archive >> http://www.caddyinfo.com/wordpress/cadillac-how-to-faq/ Cadillac History & Specifications Year by Year http://www.motorera.com/cadillac/index.htm
Dadillac
If there is coolant leaking from the bolt, then just tightening will not be sufficient. The lower bolts must protrude into the water jacket, and must be sealed before installing. The sealant must have worn away (very odd and extremely rare) and the coolant is forcing its way up the threads. A quick fix (but not a professional one) would be to remove the bolt, use the appropriate sealer (permatex must have one) and reinstall the bolt torqued to spec. Just remember that most head bolts (not 100% sure with the 4.9) are torque to yield bolts. Meaning that they stretch a little to keep the proper torque setting over time. Once the bolts are torqued the first time and heated up, they seem to keep that stretch, thus making them a one time bolt. Now I myself have reused TTY head bolts without any issues.
