safleming72
Last night I noticed steam coming from under the hood and upon opening got that distinct coolant smell but couldnt tell where it was coming from. There was a small steady drip from underneath and after looking closely while the car was running I finally saw a small stream of water being thrown upwards from the water pump drive belt. Its just a small amount but I can see it steadily being thrown up. I havent had a chance to really get a good look at it but I figured since everyone here has been a TREMENDOUS help with my other projects I might as well start here. What are some of the possible places this leak could be coming from. Thanks in advance.
stsjoe
Shaft seal on the pump, pretty common, when you pull the pump you'll be able to wiggle the pulley around (bad thing)
BodybyFisher
As Joe stated if its being thrown by the pump pulley, its probably the shaft seal. Easy but somewhat tricky job, you will need to buy a new cover seal also and either borrow or buy a NS water pump socket. The tricky part is lining up the new pump and getting the tabs/tangs to line up and torquing it properly. Some have had a problem removing it, I used an 18" breaker bar and it came loose immediately. You will get a new seal also that you must pull the old one out and put the new one in on the housing to seal the pump when it is tightened. I have a thread someplace where I posted photos, if I get a chance I will find it and post a link. MAC
I experienced the same situation with my previous '94 Eldorado--The water pump shaft seal was the problem. I replaced the water pump but it wasn't easy. I bought an air compressor and pneumatic wrench and also used a pipe with my 1/2-inch socket driver to finally break the bond. Once the pump was out it was an easy job to install the new one.
safleming72
Thanks guys, and just to verify what I will probably need...new water pump, cover seal, pump removal tool,...anything else??
safleming72
Also, any ideas where I can get the pump removal socket? I thought autozone might have it in their loan a tool program but looking online they dont list it, I'll call in the a.m. to see if they do. Hopefully it is not only available at the Caddy dealership, the 2 we have here never want to order anything for you, they want you to bring in the car so they can take a look at it and charge an arm and a leg. JimD
To your parts list I would add a thermostat, a pump drive belt (depending on the mileage on your belt), and possibly a water pump cover. The pump cover design has been changed since your car was built and the new pump cover seal will not apply to the 'old' pump cover design. Use OEM parts only! And there is a pump cartridge removal tool available for rent from this board moderator. Jim Drive your car. Use your cell phone. CHOOSE ONE !
