2001 STS interior questions

Hi there everyone! It's been quite awhile since I've been active on the board here...looks like there are some new faces, and familiar ones as well.

The reason for this post is a few questions for my Dad, regarding his 2001 DTS... (edit: pardon the Topic Title..it should read 'DTS'...opps!)

The bulb is out for the "info" button adjacent to the instrument cluster. What is the procedure to access and replace the bulb?

Also, while on the topic of interior un-assembly, there are some parking-lot induced dents in the front and rear doors. I suggested having the dents professionaly banged out, but I will remove the door panels to save the labor cost involved with that. Could someone offer the process to remove the door panels too?

Thanks! Any tips appreciated!

Scott

I am not positive, but I think you have to remove the vent louvers. Then there are screws in there that will release the dash pad. Once that is off, I think you'll have access to the button in question.

As far as the doors, I'd look into paintless dent repair. They will pull them out without damage to the paint (assuming there are no creases). Much cheaper and easier.

Others will chime in on your 2 questions, but I have one for you.

How has the SVT Contour been treating you?

Loads of fun, I bet ... do they stand up over time?

I bet you find they are LED's. My 'check engine' on my DTS cluster was half light. Went in expecting a standard bulb. It was LED, it was fixed by me. It appears most GM clusters now use LED's for warning lamps.

Interesting, the 'check engine' on mine used 2 LED's as a fail safe mode.

Better be good at soldering...the service manual has Cadillac dealers send out clusters for burned out 'check engine' lamps.

Some of the LED's are surface mount, very difficult to replace.

We had a Chevy airbag module in recently for non deployment after a wreck. Downloaded the module. The SDM module indicated the air bag warning lamp had been 'ON' for quite awhile.

They had not noticed the air bag lamp had been on. Burned out LED?

Sure enough, go look up the GM service manual, 1 LED was being use as the warning lamp.

LED's can and do go bad.

Yeah, it's an absolute blast to drive! The power delivery is similar to the Northstar...it comes on stronger and stronger as the revs pick up...except then you have the pleasure of shifting gears yourself!

Then again, I really miss the quality and amenities of the Cadillac. The car is admittedly "flimsy" compared to the STS, but then again I guess that is allowed considering they were aimed at quite different markets. The car is perfect for getting to school though, as it makes the drive a whole lot of fun, and the 2.5L get's reasonable fuel economy too.

As for the LED's in the dash, I don't think that will be worth the time and effort that you imply Logan! I'm sure he can live with the bulb for another year or so, which is when he plans to move on from the DTS.

I will look into the dent removal though Ranger...maybe for a Christmas present? lol
