Vibration at slow speeds.

I have a bad vibration in the steering during low speeds on my 97 Deville. It reminds me of a bad CV joint. It is more noticable on low speed turns either direction. There is no noise yet. I have wondered whether it could be the brake rotors. They were new when I bought the car and it had a vibration during braking so I had them turned and that vibration went away. Now I am wondering if the CV joints are going bad. High speed turns don't seem to be affected. Tires need to be replaced also. Anybody else ever had this kind of problem?

Hi Paul

I had a problem a few years ago. No vibration, when going 55 on a flat road. Coming to a hill, trying to maintain speed, the vibration would start.Replaced left front axle, problem solved. Up here in Canada, it was 80 to 85 Km/h

What does it look like when it is bad?

you and runar could be correct that it is an axle, but unless your boot is ripped and the grease was thrown out, sudden vibration would be odd. but it could be wear.

The engine mount I need is the front one behind the radiator. I think it went after I tilted my engine and did the ISS speed sensor job. However about a week after I did that job I did a wheel stand , showing off and I might have ripped it then. I definately get a muted thud on jack rabbit starts. Lift your hood, put the car in D, brakes on, and look to see if your engine moves excessively, you might have a helper do that while you look but a trusted helper, I don't need to tell you to stand and stay clear.

In addition, Logan had a bearing problem in the output shaft/carrier? on the passenger side, do a search, I think his symptom was vibration, do I search Ill look later, Mike

I understood the test for a bad CV would be heard on a sharp left or right turn, you will hear clicking.

The experience I had with a bad CV joint was that it made a distinctive "womp, womp, womp, etc." noise similar to a bad rear end.

My best description of what I have is more like a steering wheel wobble during slow speed turns either direction. I had new tires put on the front today and the "wobble" has gone away for now. I will update if the wobble comes back.

I had that it was a broken belt in the tire, glad you got it Mike
