Texas Jim
Howdy all, Just noticed today that my factory Nav unit runs ALL THE TIME. Even after the car has been shut off for several hours... you can lean over close to it and you can hear it running. You guys and girls that have nav units, if you would check them and report back, I would appreciate it. You may have to lean REAL CLOSE to hear it. I was just sitting in the car today in a real quite place without the engine running and noticed it. Took me a minute to locate where the sound was coming from. That could be why my battery died after a week of not being started. Will be calling the dealer first thing Monday morning to find out.
weephee
My experience has been that it continues to run even if turned off for 10 to 15 minutes after the car has been shut off or until you open a car door. It works the same as the power windows, sunroof, radio etc ie. retained power

The car has not been started or had the key in it since 1pm yeaterday afternoon. Reckon I will call the dealer tomorrow and make an appointment to take it in. weephee
One thing I would try is to sit in the car with the doors shut. Start car and then shut it off and see if the accessory power shuts down after, I think its 15 minutes. You could leave the radio on and see if it shuts off after that period of time. If not, then that is likely your problem. It would be more information to give to the dealer when you talk to him.
KevinW
I suspect the system is waking-up after the keyless remote is activated or a door is opened. It takes a period of time for the computer to 'boot', so this process would need to be initiated as soon as possible to ensure timely functionality. ___________________________________________________

After a few minutes the radio shut off and retained power shut off. The NAV was still making noise. Talked to the dealer today. He said there was a software update for it and if that didn't fix it, they would replace it. Will take it in tomorrow.

JIMDTS, Thanks for the info. Just talked to my son who has a new GMC Denali with nav. He says he can hear his also after using remote to unlock it, but mine is not locked. My Darling Wife has "GOOD" ears and she says she has never heard it before a few days ago. Of course there is a good possibility she never LISTENED for it before. There was no reason to. Talked to the dealer today. He said there was a software update for it and if that didn't fix it, they would replace it. I will ask about the recall for dead batteries. Will take it in tomorrow. JIMDTS
TJ The software update is probably the update that had someting to do with dead batteries. I hear that ekk ekk it's an odd sound I noticed it one day when I was cleaning the windows You can always remove the nav cd & it will probably stop that sound Too much hassle for me as long as my battery doeas NOT go dead I have no issues with the sounds

I tried that, thinking it would stop it. Took the DVD out and let it sit overnight. It was still running the next morning, including the ekk ekk sound. The problem I have with it is... sometimes mine will sit for several days at a time in the garage without being started. My concern is... if it is running all the time... THATS what killed my battery. So, therefore, if I leave it sitting again for a week or so, will the battery be dead again? I will let you know what they tell me tomorrow and what they do to it. I just searched for about 30 minutes and found nothing on this issue. I searched cadillacforums, SI, and the net. Nothing. I find this hard to believe that its normal. I am sure a firmware update will fix this. What is running the DVD drive motor? Texas Jim
Update... Took it to the dealer. They said it was normal... just like AJxtcman said it was. From what I can find out, when you unlock it or open a door, it starts booting up. That way it is ready to display the map as soon as you start it. I am still skeptical, but.....The way I have checked it since getting it back from the dealer.... After driving a while... the screen is warm to the touch. You can go out and touch the screen after it sits a while and the screen is cool to the touch. Based on "THAT", I reckon it "IS" turning off after a certain amount of time. Maybe. Kinda funny I never heard it until after the battery died the other day. The dead battery may have been all my fault. My Radar detector and cell phone charger was plugged in and "ON" for a week. I never thought about the radar detector running the battery down. There are just a few LED's on, but it is possible I suppose. Now the stupid auto headlights turn on at about 3:30 IN THE AFTERNOON, when it is still bright daylight. When starting it in my garage, in the early morning, they of course turn on. They will stay on till around 10 am. Probably a bad ambient light sensor. Will have to talk to them about that. Oh well, if that is my major problem in life... I don't have much to worry about. BodybyFisher
Maybe it turns off with the retained power circuit, and when you open the door, she boots up to be ready to direct you... I need my next gf to boot up to be ready for me, when I open the door.... JIMDTS
It probably works on the retained power & cuts out when that times out. It sure does not sound like a fan i do know that their was some update done on mine that had something to do with a dead battery it was an upate. The tech hooked up a fast chrger & did something via the techII he told me it was a fix for batteries going dead. I was at the dealer today but i forgot to ask about it I may go to the dealer in the morning if i can get some spare time I need to get the anti freeze changed i should do it myself but IT's COLD outside & no heat in my garage the 07 was a used car & you never know for sure what is in the cooling system I should have done the coolant when I purchased it It was an oversight they should have checked it as part od the certified car but I doubt it probably just looked at it & yep it's FULL typical BS stuff. Not worth having it checked I'll just have them dump the old coolant & put new in. While i was at the dealer today I picked up a new set of wiper blades not cheap but not the bad either at least they are oem so far so good the wiper blades were not wiping very good so it was time for a change These newer rain sense wiper sure are noise free & with new blades it is working fine. typical stuff i could have went with refills I have the old blades maybe next time I'l try refills not sure if the dealer stocks those On the newer wiper blades they put a rubber over the blades it appears they are the same as the old ones they just have a rubber boot that covers the blades It looks like it will be a pain to put refills on these newer blades
95SevilleSLS
I noticed my nav in my 02 also does this. I walked out after not starting the car overnight and opened the door and as soon as I opened the door it starting making the noise of it doing something. It will stop after a few minutes but as soon as you open the door again, it will start all over. Does it everytime for me ever since I bought it. I think it's normal. I think what it's doing is cutting out the loading time of the DVD. My avalanche with nav doesn't make that noise but takes about 2 minutes to load the DVD everytime I turn it on. -Dusty- - 02 Seville STS, white diamond - 93 Sixty Special, Tan with vinyl top - 79 Coupe DeVille, Tan with Tan top - 06 GMC Sierra Z71, Black - 92 Silverado C1500, black and grey - 83 Chevy K10 Silverado, Black and Grey

After driving it for a while... the screen is warm to the touch. Of course it has been running all the time you were driving, so that is to be expected. After parking it for a few hours... the screen is COOL to the touch, so I reckon they are right. It is turning off after a preset amount of time. One other thing... I wonder why neither my Darling Wife or myself "EVER" heard the sounds it makes till I got the new DVD update the other day. Oh.. the new NAV update DVD changed my default settings to keep me off the freeways and tollroads. The first time I used it for a route... it kept telling me to GET OFF THE FREEWAYS and drive on surface streets. Maybe it thought I was too old to be competant on freeways. Of course I reset it in a few minutes, as soon as I figured out what it had done. Now I can drive on freeways again without it complaining. The screen is warm to the touch while driving... and after a few hours sitting.. it is cool to the touch. Would you please let me know what update they did to yours regarding the battery, if you find out what it was? I am still concerned about "WHY" my battery died, for no apparent reason. I probably need a new set of blades for mine also. They are still real quite, no chattering or skipping but don't seem to clean quite as good as they used to, especially the passengers side. I love the rain sense wipers. Isn't technology wonderful? When it works right? It starts raining, the wipers come on automagically.. adjusting the speed of the wiper blades according to the amount of rain, turning on the headlights for you, then reversing all of the procedures as the rain slows and then stops. JIMDTS
TJ I did not have time to go to the dealer today. Maybe next week on Monday or Tuesday I can find the time. I’ll find out about the tsb is on that update. The wipers on mine were just starting to wipe bad on the down stroke they would wipe fine on the up stroke they didn’t wipe all that good. It sucked I cleaned the windshield real good along with the old wiper blade inserts no joy they wiped better but not good. So I replaced them. It was a pain in the A to have wipers that didn’t wipe very good. When I would get caught in drizzle the light rain would just leave a slight haze on the windshield on the up stroke of the wipers. Mine didn’t make noise chatter or skip the new rain sense wipers are very nice probably the best wiper system I have had on any car.
