SIXXDOGG
Good morning everyone....This may sound like a silly question....but I was wondering what causes the break dust.....is it more of the pads or rotors. Thanx! Nick PS: Anyway to get rid of this? Like different brands....etc...
Ranger
Brake dust is from the pads. It is pad material that wears off from the friction. Ceramic pads are said to produce less dust.
BodybyFisher
I am using aftermarket pads now and the brake dust is terrible. Historically I have used OEM pads Pre-1995 - DTC codes OBD1 >> 1996 and newer - DTC codes OBD2 >> https://www.obd-codes.com/trouble_codes/gm/obd_codes.htm How to check for codes Caddyinfo How To Technical Archive >> http://www.caddyinfo.com/wordpress/cadillac-how-to-faq/ Cadillac History & Specifications Year by Year http://www.motorera.com/cadillac/index.htm
John Wicz
I too am using aftermarket pads (Akebono) and brake dust is nearly non-existent.
JasonA
A good ceramic pad will produce almost no dust. Whatever is different about it -- it still wears obviously, but no dust. I have used Raybestos Ceramic QuietStop with excellent success before on a Chrysler minivan. I've also heard excellent feedback about Akebono's ceramic pads. Whatever is on my STS now produces almost no dust. I don't know if they're OE or not, but they're new. Must have just been installed before I bought the car. MAC
I remember in the mid-70s there was a petroleum based paint called, to my recollection, "Brake Black," which was used as a brake pad coating and was suppose to make the pads last longer and cut down on dust. I don't believe it's being sold anymore--Apparently it didn't work or else it would still be on the market. Back then, pads were made with asbestos so maybe once asbestos was eliminated the product could not be used?
growe3
I use Raybestos Ceramic on both of my STS's. Low dusting, and great brakes. My 04 DTS has OEM pads that work fine, but dust quite a bit. I did not want to change them yet, so I opted for brake dust covers on this car. The covers are very light-weight aluminum. If you decide to try them, remember they are sized for the wheel, NOT the car. Your stock ones would be Kleen Wheels #1602. (About $35 for two covers.) I have had them on for three months, with daily driving, and they work great. -George Drive'em like you own 'em. - ....................04 DTS............................
