Heated windshield for 94 STS

Recommended Posts

I need a heated windshield for my 94 STS project. I live in Sweden and have not got

any answer from the auto glass companies over here so I would just like to know if

they are still available in US? I have tried all over the web but not understood where to

find them and not any price either (for the heated).

Thanks,

- It means that there is no meaning with searching anymore as the price for

just a normal windshield here is $1000 without insurance so I do not dare to even ask

for the price on a heated one -it will probably end up around $3500 installed.

And over here gravel and salt is used instead of sand as earlier on the roads in the wintertime

and I plan to use the 94 STS all year round.

You might be better off using a car cover when you must park your car outside.

A standard windshield here is about $225 installed. Replacing the heated windshield is not even an option if you ask me unless you are Donald Trump.

:offtopic: I think that the problem is that very few heated windshields were sold on new cars, and that the number stocked for replacement was too small and ran out years ago. The price of $1200 minimum plus labor tells me that they are made to order and not in stock anywhere. If anyone saw fit to make, say, 100 of them it would be possible to sell them for a profit for far less, depending on the negotiated price for the stocking lot of 100. Does anyone know who originally made these? If you have one, look for the "watermark" somewhere on the windshield.

In the late 80's I appraised a new 750,000 square foot custom LOF plant in Shelbyville, Indiana. The plant was built to make windows including the heated windshields. I would be surprised if it wasn't LOF.

LOF must have been taken over by Pilkington, because when you go to www.LOF.com you go to Pilkington, if you go to this link you can see the plant in Shelbyville that I appraised, it was the biggest building I was ever in, it seemed to have its own internal climate, LOL

http://www.pilkington.com/the+americas/usa...usa/default.htm

This was in the Pilkington FAQ

10. How is Pilkington different from other automotive glass manufacturers?

One of the main differences is our global capability, with operations spread across 24 countries throughout Europe, North America, South America, Australasia and China. Combined with our strategic partnership with NSG of Japan, this ensures a high standard of delivery to our customers wherever they are in the world.

Pilkington is also a leader in the development and user of computer simulations for advanced glazing technology. Though probably most frequently associated with the invention of the float process to manufacture the high quality glass used by the automotive industry, Pilkington has also pioneered other techniques that have led to automotive glazing industry firsts such as:

the production wraparound windshield

the S-bend backlight

dark tint glass

solar reflective automotive glazing

full vehicle glazing systems including encapsulation, extrusion, bond-on components and mechanical assemblies

electrically heated filament windshields.

I had a 90 Linc. T.C. with the heated WS. Really didnt work as well as I thought it should. I didnt clear ice or snow fast st all. I still had to scrape in the morning. Ice would still build up on the WS wipers in really bad weather.

The heated WS washer fluid seem like a much better idea in that it would clear the WS quicker and clear the wipers of ice buildup while going down the highway.

Anyone have the heated washer fluid option?

The reason for asking about the heated windshield is that my 94 STS has that option

with all the things like alternator and all the electronics (100 volts amplifier in front of the

right front wheel) but with cracked windshield. Also my wife's experience with the tiny threads

that heats the windshield in her 2003 Ford Focus Ghia is quite good. Although my opinion is that

those threads can be a little disturbing when the sun is at some specific angles.

Anyhow with the low prices you have on glass I am thinking of buying one or two of the standard

ones and bring it to Sweden in a container but then I have to install it myself maybe.

When you talk about getting some company to run a batch of heated ones I know for instance that

when some of the smaller glass manufacturers in Sweden had a bad time around 20 years ago they made glass for the 'Trippe speed lights for the cars from the 30's' at a very low price.

But when it's about Cad heated windshield we are probably just too few interested.

Poking around on the Internet I found an auto glass firm that bid $999 installed for a 1993 Eldorado heated windshield. They are out there, I was wrong. B)

Bill K,

Yes, I have it on mt 2006 DTS. It is really nice.

If I am not mistaken, it heats the washer fluid to 140 degrees and THEN sprays it on the windshield.

On a recent trip to Colorado, it came in handy a couple of times.
