flatback2
This is a follow up to my recent post about the waterpump pully and adjustor bearing failure. I posted this new message because I though it would get buried in the other post and never read again. (sorry for the repost) I called three Caddy dealers and finally found the parts in Doylestown Pa. Caddy dealer tells me "we do not sell just the bearing for the adjustor so you have to buy the entire assembly." @ $107. Now here is the good part, they bring out the Water Pump Pulley (the one that goes on the cam) Caddy part number 3535846 on the box. The part they give me has a smooth race in the center with a bearing, I tell the parts guys "it looks alot like this but I have spines and it press fits to the cam". He goes and checks again and says "the 98 Eldorado has two engines and both call for part number 3534846" I asked him if there was anyone else he could check with, he goes and gets a mechanic who says 'I have done lots of these, this is the part." So I try to use logic and say "if the cam is turning and the pully has a bearing won't it just spin without turning the belt", he says "The only engine that has a spine fit is the Aurora" and walks away. Best part is they still wanted me to buy the pully ($40). Do I have to put in a new cam that will accept this pully ? Does anyone know the correct part number for the water pump pulley (the one with the spine fit). Last 8 of my VIN is WU617771 if that helps . I have been wrong before and not a mechanic by trade but this seems pretty straight forward. Any and all help is very much appreciated. Ranger
I don't know what the part number is, but you do not have to replace the cam. Try http://www.gmotors.com

Try http://www.gmotors.com well i hope not but the so called Caddy dealer experts have me worried, insisting a part that will not work is the right one

growe3
It sounds like the pulley that they showed you was for the water pump tensioner, and NOT for the cam end. (see attached pulley image) Other image is from Cadillac Manual. Tensioner on lower left, cam pulley on upper right. I believe that the cam end pulley is part #3535846. It is an interference fit, and it must be pulled onto the cam end with a bolt and washer. Do not use the original bolt, it will not engage enough threads when first applying pressure, and it will likely ruin some threads. Just get another bolt of the same diameter, but about 3/4" longer, After it bottoms swap in the original bolt and tighten until it until the pulley stops moving. I have replaced a couple of these pulleys, very simple job to do. Either pulley is about $22 to $25 at a number of online parts supply outlets. Buy from the dealer direct, and of course it will be nearly twice as much. Logan
growe3 has to be right. They are looking up the wrong part...imagine that.. No way there would be a bearing on the camshaft end. I gave it to my mechanic to track down now just don't have the time to fool with parts guys anymore. When it happened I said to my wife "well at least this is an easy fix", today when I borrowed her car she said "not so easy after all" LOL I want to thank you guys for this message board, it is really is a great service. I only wish I could contribute more to the fixes here rather than always taking from your knowledge base. Thanks again.
