flatback2
Eldorado got hot 20 miles away from home, limped it home, turning off the car, letting cool down, going a bit, stop, turning car off and coasting down hills etc. Looked like the belt was the issue and I took off the housing. Lower (smaller) plastic bearing, the adjustor is totally disintegrated. Also upper plastic (larger) guide connected to the crank is also pretty badly worn down. While the belt is pretty much shot it was not broken. Always happens on the weekend, do you think NAPA will carry both of those plastic parts and a belt ? I know my Caddy has the "limp home" mode, but how safe is it really to ride like that. As soon as it kicked in I would stop and let it cool. Worried about other damage I may have caused by running that hot. Any comments or thoughts are appreciated.
Ranger
You did the right thing. Sounds like you did not overheat too much. You supposedly can drive it 50 miles with no coolant, but I wouldn't do it unless I was under fire. Doubt you did any damage. Obviously your tensioner bearing froze. I would think Napa should have those parts. You'll need a P/S pump pulley puller to remove and install the drive pulley on the camshaft.
Cadillac Jim
The warranty holds if you drive under 50 miles, so I would venture that your car is not at all hurt. I would change the oil ASAP, particularly if you use dino oil (the DIC should be telling you that), but other than that nothing is required. This might be a good place to change your coolant, too. Make sure that it is red or orange, and put red Dexcool back in it (50-50 mixture with distilled water at $0.50 a gallon from WalMart). If the coolant in it was green, somebody changed it and its life is only two years, not five. I'd check all the other belts and hoses too. -- Click Here for CaddyInfo page on "How To" Read Your OBD Codes-- Click Here for my personal page to download my OBD code list as an Excel file, plus other Cadillac data -- See my CaddyInfo car blogs: 2011 CTS-V, 1997 ETC Yes, I was Jims_97_ETC before I changed cars. BodybyFisher
This member had the same problem with the CAM pulley, seems that it can melt if the belt slips badly http://caddyinfo.ipbhost.com/index.php?sho...p;hl=cam+pulley Pre-1995 - DTC codes OBD1 >> 1996 and newer - DTC codes OBD2 >> https://www.obd-codes.com/trouble_codes/gm/obd_codes.htm How to check for codes Caddyinfo How To Technical Archive >> http://www.caddyinfo.com/wordpress/cadillac-how-to-faq/ Cadillac History & Specifications Year by Year http://www.motorera.com/cadillac/index.htm
flatback2
Thanks everyone for the reply. Nobody has the parts today so tomorrow Caddy dealership for parts. As soon as I put some tension on the puller tool to remove the top pully on the crank it just snapped and fell off. Hopefully I won't snap it putting the new one on. Thanks again everyone. I am sure the new CAM pulley will go right on, the old one probably was brittle from heat Pre-1995 - DTC codes OBD1 >> 1996 and newer - DTC codes OBD2 >> https://www.obd-codes.com/trouble_codes/gm/obd_codes.htm How to check for codes Caddyinfo How To Technical Archive >> http://www.caddyinfo.com/wordpress/cadillac-how-to-faq/ Cadillac History & Specifications Year by Year http://www.motorera.com/cadillac/index.htm
Ranger
Be sure to use the installer to put the new pulley back on. Don't use a hammer.

I called three Caddy dealers and finally found the parts in Doylestown Pa. Caddy dealers do not sell just the bearing for the adjustor so you have to buy the entire assembly $107. Now here is the good part, they bring out the Water Pump Pulley (the one that goes on the cam) Caddy part number 3535846. The part they give me has a smooth race in the center with a bearing, I tell the parts guys "it looks alot like this but I have spines and it press fits to the cam". He goes and checks again and says "the 98 Eldorado has two engines and both call for part number 3534846" Does anyone know the correct part number for the water pump pulley the one with the spines. Day 2 without my caddy Last 8 of my VIN is WU617771 if it matters
BodybyFisher
First off, an AC DELCO water pump tensioner is $59 at www.rockauto.com, if you can wait Bring the old one so you can compare them in front of him and get the service manager involved if you can, one of the mechanics will be able to help. THERE IS NO BEARING on that pulley, it does not spin, it is turned by the cam.. I can't even imagine how he could think that is right. He didnt bring you out the idler pulley did he?
