Benny
A guy (Caddy54) on the sub forum for Cadillac Club Sweden has post a topic (in Swedish) about Distributorless Ignition system on a 1954 Cadillac 331 V8. Does anybody on this forum have experience to share, such as suitable systems, advice what to think about etc? Anything would be appreciated. I'm the moderator of the Cadillac Club Sweden sub forum forwarding his question to this board. Thanks in advance. Bruce Nunnally
Does he have the shop manual for the 54? This site: http://www.allcads.com/parts.html advertises to have reproduction manuals. OH - do you mean the owner wants to adapt a distributorless system for his 54 Cadillac? Cadillac Jim
Based on compatibility of the distributor cap part number (specious, I know) the 1954 Cadillac used the same distributor as most GM V8's through about 1957, the last being the Pontiac 347 cid in 1957. It fits the early Corvette 265 cid V8s used in the1955-1956 model years. Mallory, Accel, and others make breakerless distributors for these models. With less risk regarding the length of the distributor shaft, the fit of the distributor gear, etc. you can get a points conversion kit. I would call Mallory and ask them about it. Their web site: http://www.malloryperformance.com/ Click Tech Support, and I would start with an email response form so that you can be sure to get someone who has the time to check into the situation and refer to others if necessary. If the email doesn't lead to a part number and a distributor where you can order or buy it, you can all the phone numbers with the part numbers in hand. If you call cold, you risk getting someone who is not ready to deal with 1954 Cadillacs and just tries to get you to go away, without ever finding out that your distributor was used on a wide variety of Corvettes, Cadillacs, GMC trucks, Chevrolets, Buicks, Pontiacs, and Oldsmobiles. If that doesn't get it for you, try Accel or get back with us. -- Click Here for CaddyInfo page on "How To" Read Your OBD Codes-- Click Here for my personal page to download my OBD code list as an Excel file, plus other Cadillac data -- See my CaddyInfo car blogs: 2011 CTS-V, 1997 ETC Yes, I was Jims_97_ETC before I changed cars. A distributorless system will be tricky I believe, you will need to install a crank sensor and possibly a cam sensor. Are you sure you are not wanting a breakerless ignition?, there are a lot of companies that make that type of system. Check this out http://www.lectriclimited.com/breakerless_se_mainpage.htm Here is some interesting info also but it starts in 57, why I am not sure http://www.breakerless.com/index.html Pre-1995 - DTC codes OBD1 >> 1996 and newer - DTC codes OBD2 >> https://www.obd-codes.com/trouble_codes/gm/obd_codes.htm How to check for codes Caddyinfo How To Technical Archive >> http://www.caddyinfo.com/wordpress/cadillac-how-to-faq/ Cadillac History & Specifications Year by Year http://www.motorera.com/cadillac/index.htm
