Marika
I got the "oil pressure low - stop engine" message a few nights ago. Checked my oil level and the oil was GONE. I don't see anything leaking but I DO smell oil burning, no smoke though. Should I be checking such "typicals" as the oil pressure send switch? I know it was changed when I first bought the car but maybe it's gone bad again? Edit: Is it difficult to replace the oil pressure send switch? Can I also replace the oil pump? What do jobs like these cost, considering New Jersey prices which are 200% higher than the rest of the country. If you really want to make people safe drivers again then simply remove all the safety features from cars. No more seat belts, ABS brakes, traction control, air bags or stability control. No more anything. You'll see how quickly people will slow down and once again learn to drive like "normal" humans.
Ranger
Depending on how low the oil was, you may just need to add oil. Bring the level up to where it should be and see if the message comes back again. Check the oil level regularly.
BodybyFisher
The 4.9 has a few places that it will leak oil. It has o-rings on the oil filter adapter and the oil cooler lines that if disturbed will leak. If you are smelling oil look at your oil filter adapter and lines for dripping where they connect. Also, look at where the oil filter adapter attaches to the engine, there are two o-rings behind it that can leak, I have new ones on my bench that you can have if you want. Marika
I filled it up again and the message never came back. I'm going to have to watch the oil level very carefully. I believe most oils today contain a built in tracer dye so I think I'll be under the hood with my blue light and yellow goggles looking for leaks. I'll start where Mike says leaks are most common. Thanks everyone XXX!! If you really want to make people safe drivers again then simply remove all the safety features from cars. BodybyFisher
Good, when I got my 91 4.9 back from the tranny job, it was leaking like hell, from the oil cooler lines where they attach to the oil filter adapter, replaced the $0.03 o-ring and all was back to normal. I was doing 60 and got the oil pressure light, needless to say I was major P0'd at the tranny shop who DENIED they ever touched the lines. I looked at him and said WTF to I look like an AHOLE? HOW the hell did you get the BELL HOUSING BOLTS OUT without disconnecting the lines, its IMPOSSIBLE!!!! I warned him up front that I could do that job myself, and that I was recommended by the local Cadillac dealer and reminded him of that and that I felt he did a REALLY LOUSY job in front of customers. I immediately left his shop and went to the Cadillac dealer and informed them of how bad the job was and to be careful using him. The tranny shop has since gone out of business and was taken over by one of the national chains. He was a tough guy, but I did get loud and PO'd that they did such a ****** job and that I would make sure that I do not recommend them ever. At 6'5" 225 pounds, when I get loud and angry and indignant, it gets noticed, but my bark is worse than my bite. There was a list of problems that the car had when the tranny was R&R'd proving that EVEN with a recommendation from a local Cadillac dealer you can STILL go wrong. About two years later they called me soliciting my business for other work, and I informed him I wouldnt have him work on my mountain bike and to remove my phone number from his files that I reported them to the BBB and the Cadillac dealer and I hope I was partially responsible for him going out of business. There is no way that you can claim credit for the tranny shop folding up, Mike. The owner/operator did it all himself. -- Click Here for CaddyInfo page on "How To" Read Your OBD Codes-- Click Here for my personal page to download my OBD code list as an Excel file, plus other Cadillac data -- See my CaddyInfo car blogs: 2011 CTS-V, 1997 ETC Yes, I was Jims_97_ETC before I changed cars.
