Cadillac Jim
With a 1996 STS, you should have the OBD II system (as opposed to OBD I), and your four-digit numbers should be OBD II codes. The abbreviations that preceed the codes are three letters, and there is a letter P, B, C or U (Powertraun, Body, Chassis or network) that preceeds the four-digit codes and is part of the code. Following each code, there will be the word "History" or "Current." The abbreviations that go with the codes you give are probably TCS Traction control system RSS Road Sensing Suspension IRC Integrated Radio Chassis The codes are likely some of these: B0027 ??? (I don't have a code 0027 in any of B, P, C or U) B0038 AUX switch open/shorted to battery (an air bag code) P0038 Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S) Heater Circuit High Voltage Bank 1 Sensor 2 B1740 Driver Seat Front Down Switch Circuit Malfunction P1740 Torque Reduction Signal Circuit As you can see, I don't come up with a logical interpretation of the codes as posted. Please run the codes again and write down exactly what you see. Also, if any of the warning lights are on, such as "Service Traction" For example: Service Traction light on "Speed limited to 90 mph" message on startup TCS C0227 History This will key us onto what is wrong, if anything. -- Click Here for CaddyInfo page on "How To" Read Your OBD Codes-- Click Here for my personal page to download my OBD code list as an Excel file, plus other Cadillac data -- See my CaddyInfo car blogs: 2011 CTS-V, 1997 ETC Yes, I was Jims_97_ETC before I changed cars. BodybyFisher
Barbie, As you can see Jim had trouble figuring out your codes, that is why I thought your car might be OBD I for some odd reason and because I only found your codes on the OBD I listing. All 96's should be OBD II. Try running the codes again and post them again. Is there anything unusual about this car, is it an export, canadian, etc., Mike Pre-1995 - DTC codes OBD1 >> 1996 and newer - DTC codes OBD2 >> https://www.obd-codes.com/trouble_codes/gm/obd_codes.htm How to check for codes Caddyinfo How To Technical Archive >> http://www.caddyinfo.com/wordpress/cadillac-how-to-faq/ Cadillac History & Specifications Year by Year http://www.motorera.com/cadillac/index.htm

JimD
Not all 1996 production year cars were created equal. The EPA (and the SAE) painted car buyers into a corner when EPA mandated OBDII code standards were given the force of law. If the build date of the car is prior to January of 1996, there is no guarantee the car is fully compliant with OBDII standards. One more consequence of elected officials and hired bureaucrats deciding how automobiles (as just one example) must be designed and built. [sOAP BOX MODE=OFF] Jim Drive your car. Use your cell phone. BodybyFisher
Thanks Jim, I knew there was something with 96 that was not consistent, Mike Those codes appeared to be OBD I codes assuming Barbie Girl, wrote them down accurately. Thanks again for your help! to you guys. ~Barbie Girl~ Barbie Girl, given the manufacture date of 8/95, it appears you might have an unusual version of a 96 Cadillac, that has OBD I codes. I have a 96 with OBD II. RF 2560 Current, I get this code all the time, does your Key fob unlock the doors? Do you have two key fobs? Cadillac Jim
OBD II codes: B2560 RKE Message Validation Error B2419 Twilight Photocell Circuit Problem B2471 Interior Lamp Fault OBD I Codes: T027 LF Wheel Speed Sensor Continuity Fault S038 Electronic Level Control Exhaust Valve Short to Ground/Open This car is one of the OBD I cars with some OBD II codes. Boldfaced codes are Current. RKE is Remote Keyless Entry, the fob, which is called the RFA (Remote Function Actuator) in my FSM. It looks like the fob needs to be synchronized, and there are some loose or shorted wires under the car. The connector is likely pulled off of the left front wheel speed sensor, and one of the ELC connectors is loose or has fallen off. STSgirl96
Thanks guys. I was having a heck of a time trying to find what those codes mean. Well, thats really interesting that I have OBD I codes with some OBD II. Jims_ 97_ ETC...Thanks so much for your help. I will have my husband look and see whats going on. Mike...When I bought the car off ebay and picked it up...all I got was a set of keys. I purchased a key fob #2 off ebay and programed it. Yeah, it locks & unlocks the doors. Yes, I have ABS light and Traction control light on continuously. They never shut off. (when car is on) No, the rear is NOT high in the air. I lose air when I shut the car off. Oh, I also get service emissions. But since I cleared all the codes that doesn't come up now. If I take the car on a long drive (more than an hour) the service engine soon comes on then the service emissions comes up on the OBD. Thanks! ~Barbie Girl~
Ranger
Oh, I also get service emissions. But since I cleared all the codes that doesn't come up now. If I take the car on a long drive (more than an hour) the service engine soon comes on then the service emissions comes up on the OBD. None of those codes are emission related. Next time the SES light comes on, pull the codes to see what failed and tripped the light.
Regis
Barbie, I would first check to make sure the ABS/TC fuse is fine. Mine is located on the left side of the trunk compartment. I'm not sure where it's located on your 96. Next, as Mike suggested, I would check the left front wheel sensor connection. Check the clip and make sure that it's seated all the way. STSgirl96
Ranger, I will pull the codes the next time that the SES light comes on. Regis, I will check the ABS/TC fuse today. My husband checked the left front sensor connection and it appears to be ok. Thanks again guys. This is so much appreciated. ~Barbie Girl~
Ranger
My husband checked the left front sensor connection and it appears to be ok. That being the case, I would suspect a bad sensor in the hub.
