I also what to remove the curled up contact paper/plastic on the base of the gear selector. So how do I remove the console to repair it. MAC Posted September 22, 2007 Report Share Posted September 22, 2007 Just remove the shift handle by removing the shift handle retaining clip located at the base of the handle at the rear side. The "trim plate" (which you referred to as the "console") is removed by carefully pulling it up and out. The trim plate is secured by retaining clips. You will see small slats at the base of the trim plate where you can place a screwdriver to help aid in its removal. The console is secured by four screws securing it to the instrument panel but they are only accessible after the trim plate is removed. Once the trim plate is removed you will see four torx screws at the back of the ash tray assembly. Be careful when removing torx screws so as not to damage threads.
