ted tcb
I could use some expert help here before I call the dealer in the morning. I took my 2001 STS in for greasing the intermediate steering shaft and a 4 wheel balance (other thread). Everything was fine when I picked the car up last night. I went back in this morning for balance adjustments, drove to work and back home, everything ok. Here's the weird part. I just went out to my car to start it, and noticed the instrument lights were weak. Then, my DIC says check tire pressure (0psi), oil life at 10%, low fuel range, and my full tank now read empty. I drive over to do some plumbing repairs for my mother in law, and everything goes back to normal. Sure enough, a half hour later, I restart the car, and everything goes mad again. Driving back home, I adjust the rheostat, and the instrument lights brighten, and the instruments go back to normal readings. I turn the car off, check my fluid levels and pull codes, restart the car, and once again, dim lights and crazy instrument readings. I turn the rheostat, lights brighten up, and instruments go back to normal. The car has never exhibited any weird electrical issues of any kind. I'm assuming the dealer had to move some things around to remove the intermediate shaft. One hell of a coincidence that my instrument panel now acts like it needs an exorcist. Here are the codes. U1713 History U1066 History U1144 History U1192 History The battery reads 13.7 to 14.1 amps. Oh, the oil is clean and full, and coolant is right up to where it always sits ... just false warnings. I realize my battery cables could be loose, battery could be weak, or alternator could be going. I'm just not buying that this happens right after I drive home from having the steering shaft worked on. Any help, as always, is much appreciated by the resident gurus. BodybyFisher
Check the connections at the battery. If they pulled the intermediate shaft out, they might have disconnected it from under the dash, I wonder if there is a plug that was in the way, that they did not snap back together or if they left a ground loose.. ted tcb
I took the car back to the GM dealer this morning. I knew the battery was ok, because I never lost the clock or radio presets ... only the instrument cluster was affected. The service writer tried to explain that this was in no way related to the steering shaft work, that a 6 yr old car, especially a Cadillac, could develop any number of electrical or computer related issues. They even tried to tell me that a simple grease job has nothing to do with the dash area ... so I pulled out diagrams showing what is involved in removing the intermediate shaft. At this point, the service writer went to confer with the mechanic about the possibility of wires being dislodged during the process. They then said that gremlins like this are expensive and elusive to fix, and did I really want to go down that route. Well, I mentioned that it was 32f outside, and my car was running around 300f according to my DIC, and I had zero tire pressure. I was pissed, so he booked an hours labour for inspection. They checked the battery connections, all fuses, and any wire looms around the steering shaft, and confirmed the same codes I pulled. Although they couldn't find any issue, they must have pushed something back into place. When they were done, the cluster went back to normal, and they continued to start it up for the rest of the day without issue. Also, no new codes came up. I'm convinced the service tech disrupted some connection to the cluster when he was working on the steering shaft ... he says he was no where near the wires, but its too coincidental. They spent 90 minutes going through the car, and booked me for 1 hour. I'm not thrilled, but have no way to prove that the tech caused the problem. It just goes to show you why guys like BBF are wise to turn their own wrenches. At least they know where they were in the car, and what they may have touched. I'm just happy to have my car working correctly ... I sure hope this one doesn't reoccur. 1989 FWD Fleetwood, Silver 1995 STS Crimson Pearl on Black leather 1997 STS Diamond White 1999 STS Crimson Pearl 2001 STS Silver 2003 STS, Crimson Pearl
