BodybyFisher
Anybody know where it's at? Its a vacuum servo with vacuum provided through the ACM. Ranger
Joe, just look up above the parking brake. You'll see the handle. Don't pull it with you head down there. You'll be in for a rude awakening. Once you know where it is, you can just reach down and grab the handle. You obviously have a vacuum leak. Most likely in the diaphragm. That will cause your HVAC to default to the defrost mode.
stsjoe
Thanks for the HEADS UP Ranger The HVAC is working fine so I'm hopping its the solenoid. Auto release has to work to pass Va. inspection (sounds like BS to me, I showed them the manual release they said "no dice")
BodybyFisher
Its simple to test the servo, put a handhelp vacuum pump on it (if it has a guage thats better), remove the ACM vacuum hose, and with the parking brake set, and suck a vacuum, if the brake pops up, its vacuum related if it does not pop its the servo diaphram. I replaced mine Also, if you have a vacuum gage, you can connect it to the vacuum source from the ACM, when you put the car in R or D, you should see a vacuum drawn, whereas if its in P, no vacuum. '96 is vacuum operated, so look for a vacuum diaphragm like BBF said. Later years went to an electrical solenoid release.
