MAC
Eldorado v. Grand Prix GT I have the 270 hp. Northstar. The other day, I was at a traffic light and what looked to be a 2002-2004 Grand Prix GT pulls up beside me. I figured he was up to no good since in about a quarter mile or so our lanes were due to merge into one. I shifted to first and sure enough when the light turned green we were off. No contest! I blew him away. I thought I was going to have a bit more competition, especially since I have a bad torque converter (P039 code). Mike

Chris
How would a GTP vs STS go? My friend wanted to race me (93 STS) in his 01 GTP, but it got stolen before we gave it a shot. How would it have gone? -Chris

How would it have gone? I have personnaly raced a 2001 GTP with my 98 STS on a few ocassions. A good buddy of mine who is also my co-worker have gone at it quite a few times on our way home from work. And every time it is the same result. Off the line the GTP will pull harder and lead by 3/4 of a car length (due to the supercharger) but that only lasts maybe 2 seconds. Once my STS hits 3rd gear it's all over. So in conclusion, the GTP will take a STS off the line but not for long.
Flyer
I cannot believe how many responses this thread has gotten... I posted a while back about smoking a BMW M3 with the intake and exhaust work on my '97SLS and only got one or two responses? What gives? An M3 is far superior in powertrain to a GTP, ain't it? How would it have gone? I've only "raced" a GTP once...it was a late 90s model probably...'99 or '00 maybe. It was a 40-ish lady, and I didn't plan on a race. She stomped it and was 3 car lengths before I dug into it. From then on, neither one of us lost nor gained. It was dead even. All the way to 60 mph (when I let off), it was a dead heat. Confirms my "unofficial" G-tech 0-60 time of 6.7-6.9 seconds. Jason(2001 STS, White Diamond) "When you turn your car on...does it return the favor?" lacseville
I think the Grand Prix thread got more responses is cuz us broke guys can relate to them better. Most ppl on this board are gonna be more familiar with the 3-8 drivetrain. Yeah, I've seen an M3 once or twice.... but I have friends that have 3-8 Grand Prix' and GTPs! Wish i had a few that had M3s tho. on that note, my 4-9 can hang with GTP til the top of 2nd. from stoplite to stoplite, i'm scared of few.... CustomGTP
yeah watch out for those GT's with mods guys!! Them tossing in a GTP drivetrain with an LSD and a smaller pulley and itll be a good race. They need a few mods to keep up with the 300HP tho so you got a jump on em, although the caddy weighs more..... We got my buddy's 95 GTP well into the 13's though. Last weekend ran 13.5, so beware in Milwaukee.
MAC
I’m going to have to install some mods myself: The “Bulletproof 4T80-E performance Transaxle” with “Custom Limited Slip”, XMS supercharger, high performance chip, turbo exhaust, and for a little dash of extra power, Nitrous. Now, what's so special about those modified GT's? See ya in Milwaukee! Mike

Well, for one thing, they get into the 13s with a chip and a pulley, and you've got about 10 grand worth of parts in your car for the same performance. That's what's so special in my opinion. MAC
Jadcock I get your point. However, I suspect that my mods will outperform tossing a GTP drivetrain with an LSD and smaller pulley into a GT. Also, I’m not so sure I’m willing to believe the 13.5 claim. 1985 Camaro IROC series race car = 13.6/107mph 1987 Buick Grand National = 13.94/99.44 1990 Lotus Esprit turbo SE = 13.5/103 1994 Trans AM S V8 = 13.52/107.4 1996 Superperformance Cobra 351 V8 = 13.5/102 1998 Corvette convertible = 13.5/106 1999 Ferrari 456M V12 = 13.5/104.7 2001 Mustang Cobra V8/M5 = 13.5/105 2003 Audi S4 V8 = 13.6/103 2003 BMW 760LI V12 = 13.6/
JasonA
I can't support or deny the claim...I wasn't there and don't know the details. But I'd say that given some particular circumstances (smaller pulley, chip, slicks, cool night at the dragstrip), I'd believe getting into the 13s. I'd probably believe a 13.9 over a 13.5, but either way, they're dang quick cars that have decent aftermarket support. Plus, unlike the Northstar, they're not naturally-aspirated, so you can see good changes in engine airflow by tweaking the power adder (S/C), instead of spending a lot of money on cams, throttle bodies, etc. On the other hand, there are a lot of "poseurs" out there too. Just this morning on the way to work, I saw a "Grand Prix GT". I would think this would be the N/A 3800 V-6, but I don't even think it was the 3.8. His ghetto exhaust sounded much more like the (in)famous 3.1. He even had a "ram air" hood and lots of graphics on it. It was horrible. I probably could have taken him...in my 183k mile Nissan truck. tjtjwdad
I use to own a 98 Bonneville SSEi with a supercharged 3.8. It was real quick off the line and IMHO is every bit as competitive with a Northstar. To me it would come down to who got the jump coming out of the hole. I'm thinking though most of these cars are speed limited by their HR rated tires, unless there limiter can be removed. On another note, I have heard that these cars that see too spirited driving are prone to transmission failures. Jim White
JasonA
On another note, I have heard that these cars that see too spirited driving are prone to transmission failures. Possibly. I understand they use the slightly weaker 4T65-E transmission (vs. the 4T80-E that the Northstar cars use). Jason(2001 STS, White Diamond) "When you turn your car on...does it return the favor?" Randy_W
I had a '99 SSEi and I loved the car, but the STS's I ran up on were quicker from a slow roll. I might have been able to hole shot them but stoplight racing is not condusive to tire smoking starts! I think the Northstar cars are just a little faster than the Bonne's, since the GTP's are lighter and quicker.
Flyer
MAC, I know for a fact that those GTP's are in the 13's. I've seen 1/4 mile runs of 11.7, with only top end mods (no short block work). My boss actually has one of these cars, although he runs 12.2 quarters in his, he is constantly shooting for 11's. He just recently blew up his 392HP(110octance dyno results) motor (excessive valve guide clearance caused his motor to eat a valve destroying the motor). He now has sponsorship and an insane crate motor that he claims will beat the pants off of his old motor. I haven't gotten a chance to ride in it yet, but you better believe those 3.8L GTP's can be easily made into Corvette beaters, and better. --Flyer '99 'Vert 'Vette 45k '97 SLS 55k Deceased: <'68 Mustang 200+k>, <'86 GMC S-10 180+k>, <'86 VW GTI 180+k>, <'86 Seville 195+k>, <'93 Seville 175+k>
MAC
Flyer, Amazing performance! It makes me wonder why GM hasn’t redesigned the 3.8L to incorporate the mods. How smooth is the idle on a modified GTP? What about emissions? Obviously, it isn’t as simple as performance. Do you know how much your boss spent on the mods? Perhaps the Northstar could be modified to compete with 11.7, but cost wise it looks like the GTP wins hands down. It’s going to be interesting to see what the XMS supercharger can do for the Northstar in the ¼ mile. MAC
Flyer
Before he blew up his engine, he had around $5000 in parts, roughly, and tons of hands on time into it. He just got sponsorship, and now he bought a totally bad to the bone crate engine, and he's going to put that in this weekend. One bad thing about the engine though; it don't sound anywhere near as good as a v8!! The northstar could compete, with a supercharger, and cams, but I think that the sophistication of the drivetrain and computer control make the task much more difficult for Cadillac drivers than for the GTP drivers. My car won't even allow wheelspin!! --Flyer '99 'Vert 'Vette 45k '97 SLS 55k Deceased: <'68 Mustang 200+k>, <'86 GMC S-10 180+k>, <'86 VW GTI 180+k>, <'86 Seville 195+k>, <'93 Seville 175+k>
tjtjwdad
Those GTP's can be made to run. A while back there was a 3-4 month article in Performance Pontiac Magazine. There pretty zippy, but as I said earlier, those transmissions don't stand up to well. 500 HP with no trannie is just that ... 500 HP not getting to the pavement.
