BodybyFisher
I am looking at apartments on Long Island. A friend of mine when I was in college used to live in a cottage on an estate and I always thought that was interesting. I have lived in a house for 20 years and need the room. Housing on Long Island is prohibitively expensive. Forget about Manhattan a 400 SF Studio is $2400 a month and a one-bedroom is like $2700 a month. Imagine? So while Long Island is 'cheaper' its still expensive. Well, I looked at a cottage tonight, it is located on an estate, very wooded, secluded, rustic, has a big fireplace, a loft bedroom, with a water view in a very exclusive location. Very. Its about 10 minutes from the local social and cultural center where there are bars, clubs and upscale restaurants. The rent at $1600 is about $500 more than typical rent for a one bedroom garden apartment, but I am not really into the idea of a garden apartment. This place is breathtaking, but a bit rustic. Someone once said to me, that they want to be rich enough to hear SILENCE... well this place is SILENT and serene. Let me add that this will be a bit of a stuggle but I am thinking that it might be worth it. The owner has 8 yo and 10 yo daughters who my daughter will enjoy playing with, in the pool which was offered. The estates are like $5 to $10 million estates with stables and there are farm stands in the area selling local veggies. I figure this is a way for me to share in this lifestyle even though I must pay more to "share" it. By the way I am going through a divorce (probably because of caddyinfo, ), but seriously, I am curious what you think, should I do it? I have an eye on Arizona for one day.. Patrick7997
Good luck, whatever you decide... big decision. Some of my college friends live in New York... I am always shocked by what they have to pay. One guy is dropping $3200 a month in rent for a small apartment... This'll probably make you sick, but my 2000 square foot condo costs me about $1000 for principal, interest, fees, and taxes... I can't tell you what to do, but with cars & housing, my feeling has always been this: If it's what you REALLY want, even if it's a stretch, if you can swing it, do it. I had to laugh at the "because of Caddyinfo" comment... lol. My last girlfriend, the buying of the ETC was a factor in our breakup. She hated it. Now the new one is disappointed in the Envoy, and feels I should have bought an Escalade... you never know...

ted tcb
First off, sorry to hear about the divorce ... you kind of left clues to this in some of your posts. I hope all works out for you and the kids. To me, the best therapy in the world is a view of the water. Whether the sea is serene or churning, I love watching weather patterns change from the solitude of my easy chair. The pressures of the day tend to fade fast when you let the views wash over you. Most of the worker bees in NYC would kill for a waterfront view. The roads are full every Friday night of people trying to spend a few hours at the shore. If you could call this area home for a few years, I think it would help the transition into your new phase of life. Sitting in a comfy chair, beverage at hand, fire crackling in the hearth, beautiful views, good company ... not such a bad place to park it for the short term. Good luck with your choices. 1989 FWD Fleetwood, Silver 1995 STS Crimson Pearl on Black leather 1997 STS Diamond White 1999 STS Crimson Pearl 2001 STS Silver 2003 STS, Crimson Pearl

rmac-etc
...rich enough to hear SILENCE... I have always felt that silence is the finest luxury. I want to hear the slightest breeze, the silence when it passes, everything the birds have to say, the bark of a dog a half mile away .... Given that choice, I could not turn it down. MAC
When I was in high school my parents had friends that were caretakers of a multi-million dollar estate in upstate New York. They lived in a separate home on the estate. I went to school with their two sons and would visit on rare occasion. Needless to say, it was a beautiful place and the boys were very fortunate to have such a nice home. I guess my point is that if I were in a situation were I could afford living on an estate and the situation fit in well with my family, I would give it serious consideration, particularly for the kids. I think it's important to try to give kids the best home possible for their wellbeing and to do what I can to make sure they have happy childhood memories. But obviously, all is good only if I could afford it. I wouldn't want to put my family in a situation where the whole thing could come tumbling down because I overstressed my finances. Texas Jim
If I remember right, you work in New York City. If that is correct, I think it would be absolutly WONDERFUL to come home at night to a quite, serene place to unwind. To each his own, but to "ME" it would be worth a little more, just to have a place like that. I can't even stand the THOUGHT of living in an apartment. The constant noise of other people. The racket of their stereo... the footsteps on your ceiling.. etc etc etc Even if you don't really HEAR the noise .... it is still there. No way can it ever be really quite, like it could be at the cottage you described. If it don't hurt too much financially....... I say "Go For It." Your kids would probably love it also instead of an apartment.

I spent last night in Bed, Bath and Beyond, buying the place up. I am really looking forward to this place. I can run down to the beach, the roads are hilly (great for running on). The cottage was showcased in Country Living in 2001, I am trying to get a copy. Its an expensive rent but the benefits are many. People that work for me are paying $2600 a month in Manhattan with roommates. Half my office wants to know when the party is.... So many things to do, chop wood, buy furniture, Thanks Pre-1995 - DTC codes OBD1 >> 1996 and newer - DTC codes OBD2 >> https://www.obd-codes.com/trouble_codes/gm/obd_codes.htm How to check for codes Caddyinfo How To Technical Archive >> http://www.caddyinfo.com/wordpress/cadillac-how-to-faq/ Cadillac History & Specifications Year by Year http://www.motorera.com/cadillac/index.htm

I grew up in a detached single family home along with three brothers and a sister. Oh yes, and parents. The constant noise? Tell me about it! OKAY, there were stereos; they were ours. Yes, there were footsteps on the ceiling; ours! As a young man I rented my first apartment and gave thanks to all the gods for the silence! And the TV remote which only I controlled. ted tcb
Yep, my youngest daughter is 10 yrs old as well. I'm 46, so our spread is similar to yours. All kidding aside, she asks and expects nothing, so its a thrill for me to spoil her at times.
