mattd
I got this car (99 STS) in the spring and it was nice and quite. Somehow the hot summer has done a number on the front end. Now over every little bump or road uneveness it squeeks. I know people always talk about greesing different parts but I honostly have no clue how or what to grease. I think I would rather have the dealer do it. Before I do go and ask to have that done. What should I ask for? If I ask to have my front end greased is that a good enough explanation? LOL it doesn't sound very technical. Maybe someone could chime in and give me an idea of how i can explain it to the service guy as to what should be greased. Thanks for any input. JimD
The noise you are hearing is most likely rubber parts sqeaking. Parts like sway bar busings or strut insulators; I bet you don't hear the noise when the roads are wet. There is nothing in the front end that requires grease; there are no zerk fittings on any of the traditional (ancient design) loaded components. They are all 'lifetime lubricated' parts. jmulholl
I went through the same deal. I was able to stop the sqeaks for a while. You might as well bite the bullit and go for new struts and strut mounts/with bearings. Do it yourself with Arnott's passive struts and O'reilly strut mount kits $750. Of course it takes darn near all day long to do it. It will make a heck of a difference. Regards DrJay...
JohnnyG
My '99 started squeeking this year too. I've quieted down the front end by putting a little grease in the sway bar bushings, which my or may not be a long term fix, or even a good idea. They're cheap and easy to find, so I figured it was worth a shot. Most of the noise was eliminated by some rubber lube sprayed in the strut towers. I would never sacrafice my ride and handling by replacing factory shocks with aftermarket replacements. That being said, I still need to do a little work on the rear suspension, but am confident that a little time spent under there with some grease and a spray bottle will yield satisfactory results. Never underestimate the amount of a persons greed.
mattd
wow that is surprizing that it it's that serius. Here I thought a couple of buck to have everything lubed up...and now you guys say it needs to have all bushings replaced along with sturts and mounts. I'm really not gonna do that, as I don't plan to keep the car that long, and other then the squeeking it drives perfectly fine. I'll give the rubber lube thing a try and see if that helps any. Thanks for the info though.
Ranger
I doubt you need new struts. Bushings are not expensive and will probably solve the problem as may the lube.
Bronson
Struts, it will only get worse as time and miles go by. been there done that. I here they make passive strut replacements much less expensive than original replacement. Tried lube'in it up too !! Even went to the stealership three times before they could diagnose correctly.
