Transmission/Transaxle Cooler

I tend to believe I know the answer--Just wondering if anyone has installed a separate trans cooler? If so, how did you do it in light of the trans lines running through the radiator? I'm thinking about installing one and just wondering if it's basically a waste of money or could one be beneficial to have?

I have one on my '96 Seville and my Fleetwood Brougham but not on my '97 STS. I should add one on the STS because I tow with that car. Basically, you tap into the system such that the trans fluid is pre-cooled by the tank in the radiator and then through the auxiliary cooler and then back to the trans.

I also put one on my '94 about 10 years ago. Not sure if it helps, however I figure it couldn't hurt.

I configured mine the same way, thru the rad first then the external cooler.

To make the install much easier, I used a fitting from a '93 Olds 98. (Supercharged)

The 98 came factory equipped with an external cooler, and there is a "U" fitting (metal) that attaches

to the upper rad connection.

This fitting is a tight "U" and makes for an easy routing of the line to the grille area.

It doesn't interfere with the air box.

It was only a few bux and really made the job easier.

Where did you guys mount the cooler? I would think outside the engine compartment in front of the A/C condenser? I can't think of another location.

Yep - in front of the A/C condenser. I fabricated my own mounting brackets to properly mount the cooler rather than use the cheap nylon ties that push thru the fin sof the condenser.
