95SevilleSLS
Hey everyone, I'm doing a little switching around in vehicles and I'm giving my 02 seville to my girlfriend and I'm buying an older car. I was originally looking at an older deville with a 4.9 (about a 94 or so). Then I went to a caprice or buick roadmaster. Now I found a 98 aurora with 140,000 miles on it. It books for around 5000 I think and they are asking $2000 because it has a bad alternator (at leat they think that's what it is), the volt light is on and it keeps killing batteries. I'm just wondering how hard it is to replace alternators on northstars. I'd like to know if anyone has replaced one before. Thanks! -Dusty- - 02 Seville STS, white diamond - 93 Sixty Special, Tan with vinyl top - 79 Coupe DeVille, Tan with Tan top - 06 GMC Sierra Z71, Black - 92 Silverado C1500, black and grey - 83 Chevy K10 Silverado, Black and Grey
KHE
The alternator replacement is not that difficult but I would make sure to test the coolant for combustion gases with that kind of mileage. I'd also give the girlfriend one of the other cars rather than the '02 STS. ted tcb
I agree with KHE, the Aurora's aluminum block motor is subject to the same problems as the Northstar if coolant changes were ignored. What happened to your SLS? Does the Aurora make more sense for you than keeping the older SLS? Here is a link to a good Aurora site. You may want to post the alternator question here. http://www.oldsmobileforums.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=11 1989 FWD Fleetwood, Silver 1995 STS Crimson Pearl on Black leather 1997 STS Diamond White 1999 STS Crimson Pearl 2001 STS Silver 2003 STS, Crimson Pearl
Bruce Nunnally
Actually Aurora questions/discussion are welcome on THIS site as well. The 4L NS is very similar to the 4.6L. 95SevilleSLS
ted_tcb, Are you talking about the 97 seville? That was an STS and I traded that in when I got my avalanche. I've realized that I like bigger cars rather than smaller cars. I like the ride of the older auroras better than the seville's ride. I still haven't figured out what I'm going to do, so for now I'm not getting the aurora. KHE, I would give her a different vehicle, but she likes this one the best. It would still be partially mine because we would split the paments, but mostly hers. -Dusty- - 02 Seville STS, white diamond - 93 Sixty Special, Tan with vinyl top - 79 Coupe DeVille, Tan with Tan top - 06 GMC Sierra Z71, Black - 92 Silverado C1500, black and grey - 83 Chevy K10 Silverado, Black and Grey
ted tcb
Actually Aurora questions/discussion are welcome on THIS site as well. The 4L NS is very similar to the 4.6L. Agreed that the Shortstar has many similarities ... I owned the 6cyl version, and found it be a very durable motor. I just feel that the Aurora site will be a good resource for anyone who is going to jump in and purchase a car with admitted issues. Some members may have had the same symptoms and recommend a course of action. 1989 FWD Fleetwood, Silver 1995 STS Crimson Pearl on Black leather 1997 STS Diamond White 1999 STS Crimson Pearl 2001 STS Silver 2003 STS, Crimson Pearl
baron1701
I had my 95 Aurora go to 205,000 with not much more than maintenance issues. Change the coolant yearly! Don't let your wife use the car to jump another car in a rear end collision and you may make it to 300,000.
