bowtie123
Hi All, Has anyone posted the method for getting to the throttle body? I use to clean the one on my '99 Deville every two years (10,000 miles). I removed the air cleaner and hoses and remove the three bolts on the sensor to get to the throttle body On the 2005 I do not see any bolts to remove to get to the throttle body. I do not want to remove it, just clean it in place on the car. Thanks,
BodybyFisher
Get a can of GM upper engine cleaner (the liquid not the spray). Use a vice grip to lock the throttle body plate open, you can lock it at the stop, don't overdo the clamping force with the vice grip, just hold the plate open. Use a tooth or detail brush to clean the throat and back of the plate, use rags to clean up, let it soak. Make sure you get the edges of the plate and where the plate contacts the throat. Don't get an excess amount of fluid down the throat you can hydrolock the engine (meaning don't pour it, etc). Take your time, it will take 30 minutes to do right. The back is the hardest part to clean. Don't use abrasive brushes (stainless or steel), you might get away with a brass brush, but don't scratch the throat. I took mine off and its easier but its still time consuming. I don't see any screws or bolts to remove the sensor. in front of the T.B. If you can, run me through the procedure to get at it. BodybyFisher
Bob, if your's is the same as my 96, you take off the snorkle that goes from the air filter box to the throttle body, there will be a black collar there holding the MAF (I think its the MAF anyway). My black collar that holds the MAF has three screws holding it, take those screws out and take off the collar after disconnecting the electrical connectors... If I am wrong, and your 99 is different maybe someone can chime in here, I think Ranger has a 99 if I am not mistaken... Ranger
My daughter had a '99 SLS but it has been replaced with my former '02. I cleaned the TB on it when she first got it and as well as I can recall the '99 is as BBF describes.

Now I'm trying to do my 2005, and I don't see any screws to remove the Mass Airflow Sensor. I have not pulled anything apart yet, but just looking at what I can see, I don't see the three screws. I don't want to get into it and find out I need a gasket or some other part to finish it. Thanks again, Bob

I don't want to get into it and find out I need a gasket or some other part to finish it. Thanks again, Bob Oh sorry Bob, I thought you were talking about your 99. Here is the procedure for the 2005, the numbers in the procedure refer to the attached photos. Mike Document ID# 704608 2005 Cadillac DeVille -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Throttle Body Service Removal Procedure Disconnect the MAF sensor electrical connector. Notice Do not damage the MAF sensor screen. A damaged screen could restrict airflow and lead to a driveability concern. Loosen the intake air duct clamps. Remove the mass air flow (MAF) sensor and air cleaner intake duct (2) as an assembly. Inspect the throttle body bore (1) and throttle valve plate for deposits. Open the throttle valve to inspect all surfaces. Notice Do not use any solvent that contains Methyl Ethyl Ketone (MEK). This solvent may damage fuel system components. Clean the throttle body bore and throttle valve plate using a clean shop towel with GM Top Engine Cleaner, P/N 1052626 Canada P/N 993026, or AC-Delco Carburetor Tune-Up Conditioner, P/N X66-P, or equivalent product. Installation Procedure Notice The outlet of the air cleaner assembly and the MAF sensor inlet duct must line up when completely installed. Misalignment may cause incorrect airflow readings resulting in MIL illumination or a driveability concern. An improperly installed inlet duct assembly or air cleaner assembly may cause misalignment. Notice Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems. Install the MAF sensor and air cleaner intake duct (2) as an assembly. Tighten the intake air duct clamps. Tighten Tighten the intake air duct clamps to 3 N·m (27 lb in). Connect the MAF sensor electrical connector to the MAF sensor. It looks like if I don't remove the throttle body, then I will not need any gaskets or sealants. Thanks again, Bob .
