Trunk release issues

Well Folks,

The 99' DeVille runs fine and all, but the trunk release continues to have issues. The trunk release has worked a few times with the remote, but with no distinct pattern. It has never worked with the dash button, but then again I don't use that one very often. I can hear the relay behind the rear set click when the remote is used and assume that the same relay is used with the dash switch (but maybe not).

I thought the mechanical release itself may have problems like dirt or just a weak solenoid. I sprayed some silicone lube up into the latch in the turnk lid. I did not hear any solenoid try to actuate inthe trunk lid by the latch.

Is the trunk release mechanism in the trunk lid or somehow with the pull-down hardware?

Is there another trouble spot to look for, assuming both the remote and dash switch work about the same (perhaps 1 out of every 50-times)?

PS, The trunk pull-down always works fine and the trunk key is also OK.

Thanks in advance,

I have problems with mine also, but I think its my key fob. It works everytime from the dash. I think its time for a new key fob set. Its interesting however, I am chasing a similar problem, my interior lights. About once a month (more in the winter) when I open my doors the interior lights don't light. I also hear a click from the relay center behind the seats. The other day I was in the junk yard and grabbed a hand full of relays from a 96 and 98. I believe the relay contacts are burned and become intermittant. Just a thought, Mike

In the case of one 1996 Concours, the trunk release was observed to work intermittently (the 'click' of solenoid activity was always audible). At some point, it was determined that the release would always work exactly ONCE following the use of the key to open the trunk! The solenoid's plunger was observed to rebound excessively after an electrical release; this resulted in a suboptimal position of the plunger and insufficient force to trigger the release mechanism on activation. It so happens that using the key would reset the plunger close to a viable position. The solution was to drill a hole in the bracket and position a screw to act as a 'stop' to prevent the over-travel condition.

KevinW,

Thanks, that is very interesting info! I'll have to take a look at what you described, (in very technileese jargon). :P

From the description, it seems like this release hardware is on the trunk lid portion and under the key area. <_<

I'll have to remove the covers etc first and take apart whatever. ;)

My wife asked me once about how I figured out how to fix things. I told her that if I managed to take whatever apart without destroying it, there was a good chance I could find something to fix. However, she apparently forgot about all the things that did not come apart so well...

Thanks again
