Dave in Texas
'87 DeVille. I want a program so I can read/log the parameters on the computer system. I know how to use the onboard system, but seeing what is going on would be better. Any suggestions about a program? Bruce Nunnally
Most automotive stores have a variety of scan tool; I am not sure which of those is better or worse. I got a http://www.obdscan.net/ to use with my laptop for this. MAC
Why would one want to buy a scan tool or software. Doesn't onboard diagnostics provide all the information needed?
KHE
The OBD will list the codes and allow some degree of user interface but there are certain things the GM scan tools will do such as cycle the ABS pump, etc. that cannot be done from the onboard diagnostics. Dave in Texas
Since I first posted this, I've found a number of computer programs to do what I want. The ALDL cable is not inexpensive though! GM Reman 4.1 engine Dec '

Dave in Texas
Well, I thought I'd found what I want. Turns out that the software program has to be written specifically for the ECM/PROM/CALPAK....definitions. I have not found any that were written for mid-80's Cadillacs.
