Dropping Carriage 10 to 12 inches

Recommended Posts

I posted a separate topic on this, as I think it might be helpful one day to someone.

I am going to lower my engine carriage today and tomorrow. Logan had done it with 6 long bolts with nuts, backing down the nut to slowly lower the carriage in a controlled fashion. I love the idea. Here is Logan's thread http://caddyinfo.ipbhost.com/index.php?sho...c=12067&hl=

However, I am reading the manual and as usual, the manual has you disassembling virtually everything to drop the carriage, and I don't think I need to go to that extent to get about 10 inches or so.

Logan discharged his AC system and and manual states to discharge it. Personally I would rather not do that, and I think the AC Compressor can be placed on the side if I remove the radiator.

My questions are

Do I need to discharge the AC system

How do I handle the ABS unit

The manual talked about disconnecting the engine wiring harness from under the dash and passing it through the firewall. Is that necessary?

I plan on removing the radiator since I am doing the coolant crossover

and I need to remove the strut assembly on the drivers side and disconnect the lower control arm on the passenger side

Any tips will be appreciated, Logan are you there?

Thanks, Mike

I did this same thing a few months back. IMO the best way to drop the carriage is really not to drop it at all... Let me explain; use the FSM and follow the procedure for lowering the carriage completely and without exception. Then lower the front of your car onto four jack stands placed appropriately under the carriage. Using a "Cherry Picker" hooked up to the top of the radiator support lift the front of your car off the carriage.

Dismount the ABS unit and tie it out of the way with a bungee cord. There is a brake pipe that runs across the front of the car and is held in place by two or three clips - be sure that is free. I couldn't find any way to do this without dischargeing and dis-assembling the A/C- perhaps someone else has. And you do have to pull the main harness through the cowl. Remove the inside of the glove box, locate the harness, unplug the two or three electrical connectors AND the vacuum line and pull the harness through the cowl into the engine bay.

Have fun... ;)

This is really quite easy to do.

Big Cat how did you handle the AC Compressor and ABS unit? Thanks, Mike
