AC Clutch engagement sounds weak

Recommended Posts

About two weeks ago when I did my water pump and radiator I noticed that when my AC clutch engaged it sounded sort of weak and not a real positive 'click'. I was going to put up a post about it but let it go.

Today, I put tranny fluid in, and while it was idling cold I heard a squeal. When the clutch engages cold it squeals slightly. I replaced my AC compressor last year, maybe I should have set the AIR gap last year?

I assume I need to set the air gap, has anyone done this? Thanks, Mike

When I replaced the pulley and clutch plate all I did was use a clutch plate installer tool to torque the plate down and used a feeler gauge. I placed the gauge at three or four places around the plate to make sure the air gap was equal all the way around.

Thanks MAC, so I just tighten the clutch to drive it on and make the gap smaller? thanks

Mike,

Your description almost sounds like the belt slipping under the additional load of the A/C compressor. Have you checked the tensioner?

Thanks Ranger, I forgot to mention that my tensioner is new along with my belt.

Sounds like the clutch air gap needs adjustment. It should be .020-.030"

Thanks Kevin, is the procedure detailed in the manual?

Yes - I think it is in the compressor minor repair / on-car service section. You'll need to use the clutch plate installer/remover tool depending on what direction it has to move.
