Air Condition

Peter1972

Recommended Posts

I purchased this vehicle in DEC I should have checked the AC but it wouldn't have mattered anyway the car was in incredible shape for the year and mileage and I was buying one way another. I just got done with my usual saturday washing and turned the AC on while cruising down the interstate it's just blowing cool air set at 60 degrees. I would like to make it Ice cold before the warm weather gets here.

I really haven't dealt with any air conditioners since they switched over from the old freon I belive it was. Are there any self help options available at the auto parts stores and if not does anyone have any recommendations on servicing at dealer or independent shops? Thanks.

According to www.weather.com your outside temp is 32 degrees. You will NOT get AC with that OUTSIDE temp off of 60 or on AUTO. The reason you are getting it on 60 is because on 60 you are over riding the AUTO system and basically turning it on FULL HIGH...

The service manual will explain how the system works in detail if you read through it. The outside temp has a lot of influence on how the system works. Also see page 3 -3 of your owners manual.

Hello and thanks for the answer let me get this straight Because it's cold outside I cannot get and accurate reading of how the AC is going to work and should wait until I can test it under warmer conditions maybe put in a garage insted of waiting for warmer weather. I will run out and get my manual and see what it says.

Thanks

Here is a link to your owners manual in PDF format, you can use Adobe Acrobat to search through it to find what you need:

https://www.mygmlink.com/pdf/go2content/man...2001seville.pdf

Think about it this way, if you set the system on 65, the AC compressor does not need to run, it can blend in some 32 degree outside air to 'cool' the car. It will run when you use DEFROST so that it dehumidifies the air to stop fog up..

Automatic Operation

In automatic operation, the HVAC control module (IPM) will maintain the comfort level inside of the vehicle by controlling the A/C compressor clutch, the blower motor, the air temperature actuators, mode actuator and recirculation.

To place the HVAC system in automatic mode, the following is required:

The blower motor switch must be in the AUTO position.

The air temperature switch must be in any other position other than 60 or 90 degrees.

The mode switch must be in the AUTO position.

Once the desired temperature is reached, the blower motor, mode, recirculation and temperature actuators will automatically adjust to maintain the temperature selected (except in the extreme temperature positions. The HVAC control module (IPM) performs the following functions to maintain the desired air temperature:

Inside air temperature sensor

Ambient air temperature sensor

Upper duct sensors

Lower duct sensors

Sunload sensor

Regulate blower motor speed

Position the air temperature actuator

Position the mode actuator

Position the recirculation actuator

Request A/C operation

When the warmest position is selected in automatic operation the blower speed will increase gradually until the vehicle reaches normal operating temperature. When normal operating temperature is reached the blower will stay on high speed and the air temperature actuators will stay in the full heat position. When the coldest position is selected in automatic operation the blower will stay on high and the air temperature actuators will stay in the full cold position.

In cold temperatures, the automatic HVAC system will provide heat in the most efficient manner. The vehicle operator can select an extreme temperature setting but the system will not warm the vehicle any faster. In warm temperatures, the automatic HVAC system will also provide air conditioning in the most efficient manner. Selecting an extreme cool temperature will not cool the vehicle any faster.

I believe your compressor is shut off below 38 degrees.

What was the outside air temperature when you turned on the A/C?

Your car may be fine - You really need to perform the test when the outside temperature is above 70 degrees.
