Gas consumption

Recommended Posts

I was thinking this morning, if I wanted better gas mileage I could buy a HONDA, CAMRY, TAURUS or VDUB... Then the light changed I blew by about 3 cars and I said NAH....

Anyone who is complaining about their gas mileage should drive a POS for about a month in all WEATHER (RAIN, SNOW, ETC). Don't forget to merge onto highways, do WOTs and take your family on a trip. Then get in the Caddy and do the same, then make your decision, you might appreciate it more.

Hell, if they could make a NS with MORE than one HP per CU IN and have it get 50 MPG, I guess they would.

You can't have your CAKE and EAT it also. If you can't afford the gas, its time to buy a car you can AFFORD...

If you can't run with the BIG DOGS stay the hell out of the LEFT LANE.

You could have mentioned a GM that gets good mileage! GM does have some! They aren't ALL gas hogs :P There is the Aveo...and the...Aveo...

Well, I guess you could buy a Saturn too, they do get quite good mileage too. I was actually considering one of them before I bought my caddy. But then I would just have a Saturn, woohoo, big deal. I'd rather go a few years back and drive with some style and comfort! B) I told my girlfriend the other day that I could care less what my caddy gets for mileage. It's so fun to drive it doesn't bother me that I get crappy around town. It may have to do with my foot weighing about 30 pounds too and redlining it everywhere.

It would be considerate of them to properly rate the caddys for fuel economy instead of saying that they get 18 MPG strictly intown. They definitely weren't considering us northerner folks.

NAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think they test gas mileage with a 'professional driver' in Jason's neighborhood with the AC off, a tail wind, drafting Dale Earnhart, jr with 80 PSI in the tires, 93 octane, the interior ripped out, no spare, no power steering, a skinny a** driver (maybe Danica) and a crew getting it rolling!

Well, I think I discovered why I only get 12mpg in town.

I reset my DIC, and drove from work to home and back.

Get this ... my average mph was 11.0!!!

A 2 ton, 300hp car isn't going to get more than 12mpg at 11mph.

Jason's avg speed of 28mph is a cruise down the interstate by comparison.

The only way I can improve my mileage is to buy a siphon hose and

sneak over to my neighbor's CRV in the wee hours.

We MUST live in very similar towns. I make a 8 hour road trip and my average MPH goes up to 25 MPH

The town that I live in is very hilly too, right by a river so it's up and down everywhere. The down was designed very badly so it's a lot of stop and go. Nothing is over 35-40 mph where we go and there is always a stoplight. It's not much fun to cruise because you are stopping every 2 seconds.

I had a 12.5 average MPG and then I romped it around town for awhile and it went to 11.7. Whoops.

You also need to take into consideration colder temps, I noticed you are in Mass. My Eldo losses a good 5-6 mpg in the winter compared to summer temps especially on short trips. In the summer my avg mpg is around 20.5 in mixed driving. the last 3 months or so it is between 14.8 and 16.5 mpg.

This is very true, things are looking up... no pun intended, that is a good point.. Personally I think that is illogical, everyone is trying to get COLD air intakes as the air is dense and in the winter the cold air is a detriment

I love going on a trip, re-setting it while I am doing 65 and average 28 MPG

See, I always think, "Hey, I can get 30 MPG going 60, but where is the fun in that??" So then I floor it to 75 and get 23 mpg. B)

CONTEST $25 PRIZE TO THE WINNER!!

How about an experiment?

Lets start a thread to see who gets the best gas mileage over a two week period.

I will send the winner a prize. We will all start at a specific time, make up rules, monitor our results accurately, record our "tweaks" and stats, and do an experiment. The prize will be something related to or for, your Cadillac, about $25 or so, that I will choose based on my discussions with the winner. It could be a tool, maintenence product, whatever.

Members, in Nebraska and Jason are ineligible. just kidding Jason but you must run your tires according to the "specification" on the door, your foot it too light!,

Sounds great Mike. I'd definitely be in the running, but how are you going to verify and how can you compare a city driver to a country driver?

I'd definitely be in! Seems some road trips are in hand...

I'm guessing you could have people take pictures of their average MPH/MPG. Not sure how it would work, but it would be really cool to try this out.

I admit we would be on the honor system. But we are going to have about 10 "parameters" that must be recorded. Odd ball results will be looked at with a narrow eye and the perpetrator will be publically mocked and ridiculed,

Sounds good to me. I think everyone here is pretty honest anyway. Maybe you could have the results PM'd to you. Sort of a secret ballot so to speak. Then you could post the results along with the winner.

It is true that city drivers are at a disadvantage. But I will say this, I live in the suburbs, not a lot of traffic, but because of the types of roads that I continually drive on, I average only 25 to 28 MPH. So lots of us will have similar field conditions.

Doing this I think will teach us a lot and I think the results will be interesting to look at..

Yes I like that idea.... I am going to participate however, I'm honest

I think compiling the results will be interesting with EXCEL and graphics, etc

I think if Jason drove his car up here in Orillia on my daily cycle, his results

would be close to mine.

The town is hilly, the winter climate is very cold, the roads are loaded with

slush, lots of idling, and creeping across intersections with 6ft high snowbanks

impeding your vision.

Hopefully, my summer mileage will increase.

I'm not the least bit concerned ... I drive about 4000 miles a year, and my fuel economy is perhaps 1 or 2 mpg less than my 04 Concorde, with only

a 3.5L V6.

If my daily drive incorporated, say, 5 miles of hwy driving, my avg mpg would climb closer to 20mpg. I'm not worried because I know my car is operating correctly, I simply drive under the harshest conditions and must

pay the price.

We'll as far as the hills are concerned where I live in New England is nothing but hills. Although it doesn't snow here like it does in Canada it does snow alot maybe not this year though. So maybe you have a point.

I bought the car in DEC so maybe your right something for me to think about. It's it nothing to do with not being able to afford the gas the old addage if your want to play you have to pay. I don't care how rich people are you still don't like making the oil companies fatter than they already are. It sucks when thirty dollars buys 10.7 gallons of gas. I just came back from the shell station.

Relax guys I know that we are going to have variences in terrain, weather, sea level, size of our butts, etc. But if we record all of the variables I think we will begin to see a pattern. Items that I think we should monitor are:

Avg MPH

Outside Temp

Final Drive Ratio

Weight (as taken off registration)

Octane

% ethanol

Mileage

State

Terrain (this is a judgement call)

Total miles driven

Last time Plugs were changed

Last time air filter was changed

Any codes?

Tire Pressure

Speed rating of tire (W, H, Z, S)

Type of intake (stock, aftermarket)

Type of driver you are (judgement)

How car used (commute, trips to convience store)

Feel free to suggest any other variables I might have forgotten, Mike

I'm not trying to veer off topic here, but I have a quick question. I have cooper tires in the front and michelin in the back (previous owner doesn't know how to match). Anyway, where do you find the w,h,z,s ratings on the tires? And how fast can you go on each of them?

Wow wait a minute I did not call you a lire just stating it's a huge differnece for having the same cars. christ sorry

Peter, sorry if I took what you said the wrong way:

I refuse to belive your getting 20mpg with a 28 mph avg. theres no way thats possible

If someone tells me that they don't believe what I'm telling them and that what I'm telling them is not possible, that tells me they think I'm being untruthful.

Well, I think I discovered why I only get 12mpg in town.

I think that when you do a true miles per time calculation, 25.5 mph (which is what my average was, at least at the time) isn't that slow. It's probably a lot faster than you (we, I) think it is.

GM has several models that get over 30 MPG - the morons in the news media refuse to accept that and keep perpetuating their idea that the foreign cars are the only ones that are furl efficient.... GM full size trucks are the most fuel efficient vehicle in their class. All the TV ads for that butt-ugly Toyota truck never mention what it gets for gas mileage...

I like the idea of a little MPG contest. We should move that to a new thread so other people can find it.

My last tank of gas with mostly city driving dropped to 16mpg. I just cleaned my MAF and TB tho so now I can see if thats going to change. My air filter has some dust in it but was otherwise ok so I left it in. Cleaning the TB got rid of the sticking pedal which was getting annoying for trying to take off lightly.

As for helping MPG. Has anyone tried filling their tires with 100% Nitrogen? I remember seeing a while back about this helping get better MPG since the tires stay at a more constant pressure. I havent heard about this in a while tho but wonder if its still something that might help.

As for my own, based on my DIC I seem to get a good mpg at about 77mph. Going 65 doesnt help much more or is actually worse. I know some of the Regal GS/ Grand Prix GTP guys note that the L67 (series II SC) get their best mpg at around that also. Some of them with the right mods and freak motors can get 35mpg on the hwy.

Nitrogen will have no effect on fuel economy. Nitrogen is used by race cars and aircraft for very different reasons than what it's normally reported. Nitrogen is stored at very high pressure, so it makes needing an air compressor for filling tires a moot point. It's also not flammable, which makes it attractive for aircraft use. But for automotive use, there's practically no benefit. And contrary to popular belief, nitrogen will tend to effuse out of tires FASTER than regular air...so you may lose pressure faster due to normal losses. I would skip the nitrogen, especially if you have to pay extra for it.
