I've had my caddy for about a month and a half and last week the engine starts to shudder when i first start to accelerate and at about 40-45mph. Not all the time though, it thru SES three times last week and none this week but still a lil shudder at 40 mph. I can't remember how to check the codes so i need some refresher training on that too. Look at changing the plugs over the weekend but i want to check the codes first. 96 Deville Thanx.

Try this, park the car in PITCH dark.... Lift the hood and race the engine while you stare at the engine, sometimes arching will occur as the engine races... You should take off the vanity cover first. Look closely and keep clear of all rotating accessories in the dark... If you want spritz the wires lightly with a spray bottle filled with water...

When you change your plugs look for plugs that are wet with OIL, the cam covers have seals for the plug holes, if you have oil in the plug holes you might be completing the path to ground as you accelerate. Check the plugs for carbon tracking when you pull them..

Don't use dilectic grease on the boots when you replace the plugs its not recommended.

Can't find that code. Are you sure it is TC0073?

After the codes have been displayed, use the LOW FAN button to answer NO to the prompts til you see CLEAR CODES?. Then answer YES with the HIGH FAN button.

I believe TC0073 is the traction control ECBM malfunction. Just went through this with my 96 Eldo.

Ended up having to replace the the ECBM module on the anti lock brake system.

Are you getting the traction control light to up on the dash?

Another sympton will be you car will start off in 2nd gear.

Yeah i got the traction control light illuminated and I can't tell what gear the car starts in. I don't have a good feel for the car, it kind of shifts hard into what ever gear is first.

EBCM = Electronic Brake Control Module.

It pulses the brake system reverse of the anti lock brakes by applying the brakes to the wheels that are spinning freely to control the car instead of opening the brakes to keep the car from skidding.

It is the electronic solenoid bank that is on the Anti lock brake module under the air cleaner box.

Remove the air cleaner box and you should be able to see it. It has a large cable connector going to it that hooks up to the car's computer. If the module is bad it is about a $700 dealer part new. Not bad to install if you are handy. The hardest part is if the screws holding the electronics to module to the brake side of the module don't strip. If they do the best solution is to pull the entire unit out of the car, replace the module on the bench, and reinstall the whole system and bleed the brake lines.

Took me 5 hours with trial and error but got it done!

If you are starting in second gear that could be the reason you are experiencing shudder also, you are laboring the engine more and bogging it down.. Any ignition issues would be exaggerated if the engine is labored...

ahh yes one of my motor mounts bad. So by the car starting in second this could be causing the car to shudder which is throwing the SES light? Which is all caused by the ECBM module being bad?

Consider that the engine moving is negatively impacting a ground or connection to the ECBM...

I would clear the codes and see if it handles differently. If it is the ECBM, the TC0073 will come backpretty quiickly. You can also try cleaning the connection to the ECBM by disconnecting the cable connection and cleaning the contacts. Search this forum for ECBM and or TC0073 there are some excellent threads on how to do this.

They are what lead me to eventually replacing the module. Have had no codes since then!
