First Caddy a few (minor) electrical problems

I now own a 1994 Cadillac STS with 150,000 miles on it. I love the car -- it's the best machine I've ever owned. I had the rear bumper realigned, new mufflers installed, conditioned the leather and cleaned her up. I call her the Green Hornet now. Oil change went fine and motor is great. I just have a few problems to work out: 1) Gas guage is on E and only comes up just barely when turning on the ignition (i.e., it's not totally dead), despit having a full tank. 2) chime/cigar lighter fuse in trunk was removed - I replaced it only to find the chime works, but beeps twice as fast when headlights are on -- Why is this? I believe the last owner wanted the chimes off (so he took out the fuse in the trunk), but needed the front cigar lighter to work. I checked out this idea and found an extra positive lead was attached to the battery and comes straight up through the console floor to the cigar lighter (i.e., cigar lighter works even when chime/cigar lighter fuse in trunk is removed -- could this be causing the problem? 3) The underhood lamp does not work despite having a new bulb and clean contacts 4) Twilight sentinel is not working (no big deal as headlights and fog lights work manually). 5) Battery is fully charged but DIC reads 0.0 volts. 6) Range indicator reads "Low", despite full tank. Overall, I love this car and just need some pointers on where to look.

Change your coolant to whatever color is in there. as soon as you can

Depending on the condition, the chime has 2 levels. normal, & fast. to name a few. normal may be a door open etc. fast is headlights on, keys in ingnition., overheating.

Your problems #1 and #6 are related. You may have a fuel level sensor problem in your tank, its part of the fuel pump. This could also be a ground problem, so I would get a service manual and use the diagnostic tree to determine what is wrong..

You have an on board computer that analyzes the systems and sets a fault code when something is amiss... You should retrieve your codes and post them here.... You do NOT need a CODE reader now do you need to go to Autozone, you can retrieve your codes from your DIC... Retrieve them and post them here..

See 1989 to 2000 here for retrieving the codes

The underhood lamp does not work despite having a new bulb and clean contacts

I think it only works with the headlamps on.

Thanks for the hint. I misread the owner's manual. I was just switching on courtesy lights. I turned on the Headlamps and the underhood lamp went on just fine. 5 more problems to go, I'll pull the codes.

I pulled the codes: here are the current "C" codes - R061 = "SIR indicates primary battery power circuit fail" and R062 = "Redundant SIR indicator circuit failure"

I believe these codes were translated correctly for 1994 Cadillac STS.

History codes are: P052, P099 P109, S036, S044, S060, S061, S073, and I052. How do I scroll through the PCM on "PCM?" prompt. Should I be scrolling through each module in order to pull out more codes?

I appreciate all the help with this forum.

Had the coolant checked out during oil change - they said everything was fine. Temperature is normal 196 to 220 maximum, although it's quite cold outside (10 deg to -10 deg). I'll take this to heart and check it out, after all the engine is aluminum. Haven't had any leaks or loss in coolant level, but maybe it's best to play it safe and change coolant. How often is it recommended to change anyway?

All problems (1 through 6) fixed. Thanks to all for the help. Fuse A3 (engine compartment, IGN 1) had a blown 15 amp fuse stuffed in it. I replaced with the recommended 10 amp microfuse. Removed non-factory positive lead on battery to cigar lighter in console and rewired to original circuit. I lucked out on this one. Factory repair manual through AllData was also a big help. The "Green Hornet" is now requiring its antenna to be fixed. I assume its got a broken antenna cable, since the motor and relay still run but the antenna won't go down (i.e., I can't push down the antenna mast with my finger either). Anybody have any quick fixes for this problem?
