Third Master Cyl replacement in 4 years

Recommended Posts

Original lasted ~8 years, started leaking out the back. Replaced it with a reman unit (funds were slim at the time), and that lasted < 2 years before leaking out the back. Replace it with another reman (just a tightwad at that point) ... guess what happened? Leaking out the back. Maybe I use the brakes so rarely that the o ring dry rots :) ..

So I bought a new unit from napa, it was ~$190 as opposed to a new delco at $240 from another local parts house. The delco is 189 from rockauto, but I needed to get it fast. Thought that napa's parts should be at least close to delco for quality and reliability. I will spend the greater sum if the part is something that would strand me if it failed, like the fuel pump which I recently replaced with a delco.

Anyway, a fairly easy job, but when I turned it on, the dic reported 'brake switch failure' ... (this is the first time that the reservoir and switch were replaced). I reset the connector and still had the error. So, I took the old switch from the original reservoir and swapped it with the new and it worked.

So, I know there is a moral to this fractured fairy tale .....

If you bleed your brakes, I recently read someplace that pushing the brake to the floor can damage the rubber seals as the seals are forced to move over a rough and rusty cylinder area. Also, if you have not done so flush your brake fluid, you might have moisture causing rust.

So.... if NAPA's supplier can't get a float switch to perform maybe they can't get the cylinder to perform?....

MityVac to the rescue.

Good point Jim, I meant to say that...

I have always been careful about not pushing it to the floor. I did bleed everything each time. Also, I have been using a MityVac for some time, probably found out about it here ...

Hope this one lasts a while longer, car only has 156k on it....

I'm inclined to think the moral is that MityVac is wonderful.

Dunno what that says about aftermarket parts for you. Your experience. Your call.

I know what my call is. I'm OEM all the way.

Thanks. I'm not smarter than you. I'm just fortunate I didn't have to skimp at that time. Another time, who knows?

Warren :)

Sounds like you are one of us who bleed or flush or otherwise refresh the brake fluid regularly.

Just as a follow-up to your frequent master cylinder replacements, what type of brake fluid have you been using in your car? DOT 3?, 4?, other?
