QbanCgar
i was on my way home & my message board it read "BATTERY NO CHARGE". we about 5 miles later (& i'm somewhat lucky) by my car dies on me, so i by the grace of the car Gods, coast my car down I-270 2 the exit ramp & pull my car 2 a stop @ the Park-n-Ride. i lift the hood & find part of my problem, my alternator belt was shredded. well i get my car towed 2 my house & the tow truck driver who was very nice as well as very knowledgeable about cars, showed me another problem, my idler pulley was also loose. the ironic thing is, it's cost me more 2 have my car towed than it's gonna cost me 2 fix the belt & pulley. BodybyFisher
I am surprised you didnt hear the pulley acting up before it allowed the belt to come off. I recently replaced my idler and tensioner.. I recently got AAA and towing is free. Check out the Goodyear Gatorback belt it is suppose to be 15 db quieter.. Glad it was easy to fix. Glad it was easy to fix. it's fun e b/c that's the exact belt i got from Auto Zone; Goodyear Gatorback part #4060835 6PK2120. i haven't fixed it yet b/c Auto Zone gave me the wrong idler pulley & they had 2 special order the part & it wouldn't b here 'til tuesday. so i went 2 Advance Auto & ordered the part, not only was it $10 cheaper, but it'll b there 2morrow! i did hear a fun e noise comin' from the engine, but i never thought 2 check 2 c it was the idler pulley. GreenMachine
Yeah amazing, Autozone can sell it for so cheap but then the actual Good Year Geminis want an arm and a leg, I was quoted 60 for the belt, 90 to put it on my 98! JasonA
For future reference, see if your auto insurance company offers roadside assistance coverage. USAA offers it for $2 per car, per 6 months. Yes, FOUR DOLLARS a year for towing coverage. I've had to have ours towed once, and it does not count as an insurance claim, at least not with USAA. MAC
I had the same thing happen but lucky for me I was able to drive to a nearby auto parts store and bought a belt to bypass the idler pulley and drove home. The bearings finally gave out and the pulley loosened causing the belt to fall off. A new pulley was about $16 and the belt was about $25. The pulley was a pain to get off, which is why I couldn't do the repair in the parking lot. I finally replaced it but I had to use a propane torch to heat the bolt just enough to back it out. Patrick7997
State Farm towing is pretty reasonable too.... EGreen, I hear ya! I was amazed when I got the same quote. Whoa.... Takes like 20 minutes to save $120?? Ahh, okay, I'll do it.... I do like the Gatorback belt... it's quiet.
QbanCgar
well w/ a lil help from a friend we managed 2 get the idler pulley, the new belt back on a lil over an hour & a half. we probably would've been done faster if we didn't drop the bolts, rachets, pulley 50 times. i swear GM sure didn't give u much room 2 operate n there. i tell u that belt was a M. Fr 2 get on, iespecially n this cold weather her on the east coast! nonetheless after a quick jump & lettin' her run 4 about 10 min, she's was back 2 normal. now i can work on gettin' a new exhaust. MAC
I know it's too late but replacing the idler pulley from underneath the engine would have been easier because it gives a bit more maneuvering room. Trying to get a wrench or socket on the pulley bolt looking down is not the most convenient way. At least when I had to heat the bolt to remove the pulley I found that going from underneath made the task easier.
