The Trunk Pull-Down

Okay, the trunk pull-down.

Does it really serve any purpose?

Sure it's a neat feature (not sure why, but it's still neat), but does it serve any greater purpose than having me follow the car wash guys around and making certain they don't slam my lid? I'm ascaired-to-death someone else is gonna crush it. Mucho $$$.

Opinions appreciated. :)

Warren

The turnk lid latch has a hinge that allows it to be slammed like any other trunck lid. It will simply pull down normally when slammed. Some people can have a Cadillac for years and never know that they have a pull-down trunk latch.

I recall having been told here that "slamming" the lid would damage the trunk pull-down motor.

Have I been wrong all this time?

I'm sure that slamming it can't HELP it, but it doesn't seem to hurt it, at least not mine. I always wash my car myself, so I don't know about the car wash jockeys, but I do tend to try to keep others from slamming it. But it has been slammed before, with no ill effects so far.

And that's the precise reason for the pull-down feature. Why have to slam the trunk (as you do on most vehicles, including newer Cadillacs)? Just ease it down and let the motor pull it home. It's class, and that's what Cadillac is all about. :)

I don't know why they don't do the doors this way. Maybe crash standards or something.

As a college student/avid outdoorsman I have come to LOVE the trunk pull down motor. I routinely have my trunk packed to the BRIM, and in all honesty would not be able to close the trunk if it wasn't for the motor. All I need to is squeeze the trunk down far enough until the latch engages (which can take quite a bit of effort), but once the motor catches the latch all I do is sit back and watch ;)

I truly feel sorry for my peers who have to bounce on top of their trunks on move out day in order for them to close. All I have to do is get that latch to engage :D

Definitely think the trunk pull down is a great accessory, sorry to hear they discontinued it :(

As some of you may know, from past discussions, I'm not a big fan of the trunk pull down feature. However, I can understand at least one reason for it's existence. If not for the pulldown feature I'm fairly certain that my caddy would be going through a lot of rear inboard light housing units. Those units don't take kindly to slamming. They're heavy and relatively fragile. I believe the same basic light housing design is similiar right up to the 99 model year (STS and SLS at least). Examine yours and note how close they come to the stop plate trim piece. Ask yourself how many slammings those light housings could take. Now imagine if you were to get a tiny stone or debris in there while you were slamming the trunk lid...eek! Awhile back I talked with a couple of GM parts guys and they assured me that slamming was a no no. If you slam the deck hard it should bounce back up. If you close the deck semi- hard it will engage but you'll know by sound and feel that it's not a good idea. Something to consider. I sure do miss being able to slam the trunk however.

That is no problema!

Simply disconnect the motor power and screw it down. Voila, you have a "manual" trunk lid! :D

I always liked that feature and like Jason, I think it was a touch of class. I always took great care not to slam it and instructed others likewise. I am sure that continuous slamming will have an ill effect, though an ocassional slam, while making me cringe, caused no harm. As to the original question, I suspect it's purpose was nothing more than to make the car a little more "Cadillac".

Jason, you've just reminded me of another reason I want to strangle the car wash jockeys!

They always move my seats around, and I can live with that, but after my last visit I found they changed my memory seat settings! I think I'm gonna go postal!:lol::lol:

I wish I knew how to respond to that.:lol::lol:

Slamming the trunk lid is hard on the upper latch switch that activates the pulldown mechanism. I too feel it adds a touch of class - one of the reasons I buy Cadillacs. I get discouraged when such features are eliminated....

If you're concerned about it you should speak up and tell them to not slam the trunk. If I saw someone slam the trunk I would speak up--I would go to the manager about it and hopefully he/she will tell the employees to be careful. If they break it, they're buying a new motor.

Once I brought my Lincoln Mark VII into PepBoys for new tires. The young kid who mounted the tires didn’t know that the wheel caps had to be installed before mounting the tires. So instead of asking for help he took a hammer/mallet and tried to tap them into place. He dented one so badly that before I left I went in and showed the manager. The kid admitted to denting the cap and PepBoys reimbursed me for a new one--$60.
