Key Fob Reprogramming

I lost my driver 1 key fob. I purchased a new one and wanted to program this fob myself using the manual. I was able to program it to the 3rd user, although I would prefer to have the new key fob set to driver #1. Is there a way to reprogram this key fob to work as driver#1 and also make it so the lost key fob will no longer work ?

I thought there was a 2nd method to reprogram *all* keyfobs, as opposed to adding another fob. This, in essence, disables all other keyfobs.

this info is for a 2005 STS, but it should be the same for an 06 STS, i think you need to follow method #2

There are 4 methods for programming key fobs. Up to 4 key fobs may be programmed to the remote control door lock receiver (RCDLR). Each programmed key fob is given a position of #1-#4 in the RCDLR memory.

Method 1 - Key Fob Quick Learn

This procedure will add key fobs. Fobs will be numbered in sequence based on when they are programmed; if 2 fobs are currently programmed to the RCDLR, a fob programmed using this method will be numbered as Fob 3. This procedure requires that you have a known good key fob, a replacement key fob, and the vehicles mechanical key.

Important: This procedure is not available when the maximum number of fobs (4) have been programmed. If 4 key fobs are programmed to this RCDLR and this method is attempted, the driver information center (DIC) will display MAX FOBS LEARNED and the programming procedure will exit. Method 4 must be used in this instance.

The vehicle must be OFF.

Place a known key fob within the interior of the vehicle.

Insert the vehicle key in the driver door lock cylinder located in the driver door handle and cycle the key 5 times within 5 seconds.

The DIC will display a message: READY FOR FOB X (X = fob 2, 3, or 4).

Place the replacement key fob in the console fob pocket with the buttons facing forward.

A beep will occur and the DIC will display: READY FOR FOB X (X = fob 3 or 4) or MAX FOBS LEARNED.

If programming additional key fobs, repeat steps 5 and 6, or press the OFF/ACC portion of the ignition switch to exit programming mode.

Operate the active portion of each key fob in order to finalize the programming sequence and verify correct system operation.

Method 2 - Key Fob Slot Programming

This procedure will add or replace a key fob. Method 2 allows you to choose which location (slot) the unprogrammed fob will be learned to. If you are replacing a key fob, this method will erase the previously known key fob programmed to that particular slot. This procedure requires that you have a known good key fob, a replacement key fob, the vehicle mechanical key, and a scan tool.

Important: This procedure is not available when the maximum number of fobs (4) have been programmed. If 4 key fobs are programmed to this RCDLR and this method is attempted, the DIC will display MAX FOBS LEARNED and the programming procedure will exit. Method 4 must be used in this instance.

The vehicle must be OFF.

Place a known key fob within the interior of the vehicle.

Install a scan tool.

Use the scan tool, to access the following:

• Vehicle Control Systems

• Computer/Integrating Systems

• Module Replacement/Setup

• RCDLR

• Program Key Fobs

This procedure will first erase all known key fobs. The procedure will then program a single or multiple key fobs. Method 3 is a series of three 10-minute key cycles, for a total of 30 minutes. This procedure requires that you have a replacement key fob and the vehicle mechanical key.

Important: All previously programmed key fobs will be erased upon completion of the 30-minute programming procedure. The order in which the key fobs are programmed will determine its numbering position within the RCDLR memory. The first key fob programmed will be key fob #1, and the second key fob programmed will be key fob #2. The number stamped on the key fob case is for reference only: #2 can be programmed as #1.

Do not place any known good key fobs in the vicinity of the vehicle when programming with Method 3. If the RCDLR recognizes a known good key fob during Method 3 programming, the programming mode will resort to Method 1.

The vehicle must be OFF.

Place the replacement key fob in the console pocket with the buttons facing forward.

Insert the vehicle key in the driver door lock cylinder located in the driver door handle and cycle the key 5 times within 5 seconds.

The DIC will display a message: OFF/ACC TO LEARN.

Press the OFF/ACC portion of the ignition button.

The DIC will display a message: WAIT 10 MINUTES, then it will count down from 10 to 0, one minute at a time.

When the counter reaches 0, DIC will display OFF/ACC TO LEARN.

Repeat steps 5-7 two more times, for a total of 30 minutes.

The DIC will display a message: OFF/ACC TO LEARN.

Press the OFF/ACC portion of the ignition button.

A beep will occur and the DIC will display: READY FOR FOB 1. At this time all previously known key fobs have been erased. When fob 1 is programmed a beep will be heard and the DIC will display a message: READY FOR FOB 2.

Additional key fobs can be programmed by taking fob 1 out of the pocket and inserting fob 2. If desired, up to 4 fobs can be programmed. Once 4 fobs have been learned, the DIC will display a message: MAX FOBS LEARNED, and automatically exit the program mode.

If learning less than 4 key fobs, press the OFF/ACC portion of the ignition button to exit the program mode.

Operate the active portion of each key fob in order to finalize the programming sequence and verify correct system operation.

Method 4 - Service Programming System Fob Programming

This procedure is a 10-minute relearn procedure using the Techline Terminal with SPS software. Once the 10-minute timer has expired, the fobs can be programmed similar to Method 2 using slot programming. A scan tool, Techline Terminal, and a replacement key fob are required to perform this procedure.

Place the vehicle in the Vehicle On, Engine Off mode.

Connect a scan tool to the vehicle.

Insure that all power consuming devices are turned OFF on the vehicle.

With a scan tool, select Request Info under Service Programming System and follow the scan tool on-screen instructions.

Disconnect the scan tool from the vehicle and connect the scan tool to a Techline Terminal with the current Service Programming System (SPS) software.

Turn the vehicle OFF.

On the Techline Terminal, select Service Programming System and follow the Techline Terminal on-screen instructions. Ensure the correct programming procedure is selected based on component being replaced or programmed. See Important above.

Disconnect the scan tool from the Techline Terminal and re-connect the scan tool to the vehicle.

With a scan tool, select Program ECU under Service Programming System.

At this point the scan tool must remain connected for the duration of the 10 minute relearn procedure.

When the 10 minute relearn procedure has completed, use the scan tool to access the following:

• Vehicle Control Systems

• Computer/Integrating Systems

• Module Replacement/Setup

• RCDLR

• Program Key Fobs

Select Fob X (X = 1, 2, 3, or 4) on the scan tool. This will be the slot you wish to program to.

Place the replacement key fob in the console pocket with the buttons facing forward. A beep will occur indicating programming completion. The previously known fob is now erased.

The caddy I recently bought just came with the #1 key fob and was thinking of adding another.

The 1997 does indeed use a different procedure. Only two fobs can be programmed. Both must be present when programming is done. The process is on pages 9K-4 and 9K-5. I'll transcripbe it if you need it.

On my 2003, some key fob programming operations require the scan tool.

See if you can get your local dealer to do it for free.

If you choose to use method #2, yes, you need a scan tool. BUT, if you use method #3, (which takes about a half hour), you do not need a scan tool, but you will have to reprogram all the key fobs for the vehicle.

If you have the time and do not wish to go to the dealer, i would suggest method #3,

I already went ahead and programmed my newly purchased keyfob to location #3. Now unless there is a way to clear the memory of the keyfob I will not be able to use method #3 unless I purchase another keyfob or bring it to the dealer. Is there a way to clear the key fob ?

I think you are going to need someone with a scan tool to help you out here, and use method #2 above. I cannot see any other way of removing and already programmed fob.

That said, the only other option i can find, is getting your hands on yet another key fob, (borrowing from a friend?!?), and using method #3 to erase all known fobs, then, using your own fobs with method #3 again , to erase the borrowed fob, and programing all of you own fobs again.

I have a similar question. I purchased an additional key fob with the intention of having a second “Driver 1” key fob. I programmed the new key fob using Method 1 and it mostly works but it does not register as “Driver 1” so none of the programmed settings for “Driver 1” are active. Also, the new key fob will not remotely start the car. Is it possible to have two key fobs set as “Driver 1” (or Driver 2 for that matter) or are 3rd and 4th key fobs always driver neutral?

Must say i am loving the site. I am trying to figure out how to program a FOB for a 04 CTS? I read through, but i am unsure of the "console pocket" part. Im assumeing this is a STS only step?

Ok im confused. My 2000 didnt come with a remote key fob so I brought one off Ebay. Now I was always told I would have to use a scanner tool to program it to my car. Are you guys telling me I can do a procedure myself to learn the key fob?

Just a nit-picking little side bar here. The key FOB is not the item being "programmed".

The programming exercise provides an opportunity for the Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) module in the vehicle to recognize the data stream being transmitted by the key FOB.

Ok... I have a question... When I bought my 94 Deville I never got a factory key fob. I am a repo man and I found a random Cadillac Key fob laying in a 08' Escalade that I repoed... Can I have that key fob programmed to my 94'? If so can anybody tell me how??

Dear Nobel Sir, so I used method three ( 3 ) and I was able to follow the instructions until the screen reported

Ready for FOB 1 and then beeped as explained in the method. Then the display proceeded with the following

Ready for FOB 2 and soon as I placed the second FOB in the pocket it beeped and the display proceeded with the following

Ready for FOB 3

At this point since I was only programming two FOB's, I pushed OFF/ACC button again to quit. (May be I wasn't suppose to do that?)

After that there were no more messages

So I got out of the car and tried the fob's and they did not work. What did I miss here or where did I go wrong?

Quiet frankly I think I don't understand or know what the last step of method 3 means in the directions

The active portion would be the "LOCK/UNLOCK" button and the TRUNK button.

That’s very strange. I did replace the batteries in both remotes and it goes through the program on display center without displaying any un known messages but when I push on unlock button (or any other button for that matter) it still doesn’t do anything.

I have no idea what's causing this. Should I replace the batteries once more in case the new batteries are dead because I tried to program the FOB's four times already?

The '98 Eldorado key fob learning procedure should be the same as the '96-'97 Seville. It can be done from the dash/climate panel.
