Maintenance History

Does anybody know of a website where one can find out the maintenance and repair history for a specific car by using it's VIN?

I know that GM dealers have that capability on their internal network but it would be nice for a non-GM employee to get the car's history.

Before I bought my SLS on eBay I ran a Carfax on it. The only thing it gave me was the ownership hisory and that it did not have any major problems such as flood, fire, accidents etc etc, basically telling me that the title is "clean".

I guess I have to wait until I get back to the US in december and try to talk my local dealer into puliing up the maintenance history for my car.

Remember that the dealer will only have a history of what was done by a GM dealer, not repairs or maintanence that was done elsewhere or DIY.

And that's why I like to buy used cars coming off of lease.

That's hard to find. I've found Carfax to be rather useless. The data is often erroneous and is only as good as the reporting agencies. It's usually things like registrations, inspections, etc. There can be some noteworthy warnings provided by Carfax, but realize also that you should verify that before making a decision based on it. Carfax reported my old Cutlass as having an odometer rollback -- during the time I owned it! The problem was a transcribed mileage number on a state inspection form.
