$200 Eldorado with bad headgasket

Someone in my neck of the woods has a 1988 Eldorado with 115k miles that belongs to his son. According to the father, it runs but overheats after driving it. They brought it to the mechanics and the mechanic told him it needs a new headgasket and that Cadillac engines during this time period were junk. The dad didn't think it was worth fixing so is willing to let it go for $200.

From what I remember, headgasket failure is rare on these engines and maybe the problem is due to a bad waterpump or thermostat. Hmmm, its really tempting to go look at it considering the work I might have to put into my car and considering the fact this one has half the miles.

You might casually read the VIN throgh the windshield and run a CarFAX on it to make sure that it has a clear title and wasn't undewater in NOLA during Katrina, a taxicab in Anchorage for 10 years or some such. $200 sounds too good to be true.

Ed,

At the very least you'd have a $200 parts car for yourself. That in itself would be an outstanding deal. Of course, as Jim is suggesting, I would want to check it out. But for $200 I'd only have to do a visual check. Now if only I could find another 94sts for $200 ;) . And if the eldo actually runs then bonus. I wouldn't wait too long.

I'm going to have to reluctantly pass on the car. I can't get another car without getting into trouble. :( It's the price to pay for living in Southern California where it is fine to work on your home but working on your car is looked down upon. If I want to continue living here, sooner or later I'll have to go in debt like most people around here and buy a new Honda or Toyota. I'm defenitely the minority around here. They do have a point, houses go up in value 25% a year in my area so all that has to be done is refinance the house which will give you easy money to buy a new car.

Do not worry- all of those dumb normal people will be doomed when Real Estate prices in areas like thos start correcting themselves. People have grown accustomed to debt filled and free money lifestyles
