Help! Rear bearing shot

Chris

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

A while back I posted about a steering looseness. Took it in and they wanted to do an alignment. When I went back for the alignment they said the one of the rear bearings and both bushings were shot.

Apparently, the rear bearings, bushings, etc are included as one assembly per side, at a cost of $950 each. I took a look on gmpartsdirect.com but could only find front bearings.

The mechanic suggested trying auto recyclers, but I wouldnt want to end up with another bearing approaching the end of its life.

Any ideas where I could get the parts cheaper (or part numbers) for a 1993 STS? Does this sound fishy (the mechanic has been good in the past)?

Any/all input would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Thanks for the links! Looks like I can get the parts for $500 USD including shipping (almost 75% off what the mechanic wants). I will make sure the part numbers are the same etc and post back.

You are welcome. First make sure you NEED these parts. Get a second opinion.

Chris,

one of my rear upper knuckle bushings on my '96 SLS ist shot. I noticed that while cleaning the wheels . Grab your tire at the very top and move it in and out. If you feel serious play investigate further.

I could not detect that looseness with the car on a hoist and the wheels hanging down.

At first I thought it's a very loose wheel bearing but it is the upper bushing, had the knuckle out of the car to investigate.

I pressed the defective bushing out of the knuckle to see whether it can be fabricated but had no luck. The knuckle with upper and lower bushings is available as a complete assembly only.
