Wipers chattering

I've read some previous posts, but I'm having no luck fixing my chattering wipers. I replaced my blades with new oem GM wipers, but the chatter still continues.

I've washed the windshield with bon-ami, ajax, comet, spray-way window cleaner, windex, rain-x, claybars, simple green, simple green extreme, dawn dish soap, ivory soap, snuggle fabric softener, Tide, Tide with Bleach, and wool-lite. In my last attempt, I even scraped the entire windshield with razor blades.

I've tried the rain-x treatment, and come to find it makes the chattering worse after one rain-storm. The only benefit is that without the wipers running, the chattering is gone.

I've just about retired my Eldorado to 'sunny days only' due to this problem, and now drive the Jeep in anything but sunny weather. One night I got so irratated by the chatter that I actually sprayed my windsheild with WD-40 (don't ever try this!). What surprised me is that with the WD-40 the wipers were silent, with no chatter or skipping, which says to me the mechanism and motor isn't the cause of the chatter.

I've adjusted the angles of the wipers, tightened the arms, played with tensions. I'm starting to think I should just replace the windshield, wipers, wiper arms, wiper mechanisms and motor.

Anybody ever find a reasonable solution to this?

Here is the solution, find BonAmi for windows (GM used to repackage this and stopped), the ONLY place I have found it is DO IT BEST HARDWARE

See it here

http://doitbest.com/DoItBest/Main.aspx?Pag...&SKU=655197 BE CAREFUL, the stuff you find in the grocery store is SCOURING POWDER not recommended for windows/glass!

Do a search to see if there is one near you, or order it from them on line!

Make a nice paste and using a sponge in circular motion clean the entire windshield. The water will sheet off and your wipers will be smooth as silk... Be sure to clean you wiper blades with windshield washer solution and a paper towel.. Mike

My windshield is so clean it sparkles when I use it, it removes wax buildup, tar, road dirt, sap, etc

I had the same problem, Boston....

I cured mine by lubricating that hinge at the base of the wiper and getting that to properly move and flex during the stroke.... mine had a little rust there, which kept it from moving.... I theorize that the rust kept it from exerting proper downward tension....

Cured mine. Hasn't chattered since April. Not once. All that stuff on the windshield did nothing for me. Get that hinge lubed... again, my sense of the engineering of the thing is that insufficient downforce causes the chattering... at least in my case.

Good luck.

my drivers side wiper suffers from this, will certainly try these suggestions out.

The Green's Machines

1998 Deville - high mileage, keeps on going, custom cat-back exhaust

2003 Seville - stock low mileage goodness!

2004 Grand Prix GTP CompG - Smaller supercharger pulley, Ported Exhaust Manifolds, Dyno tune, etc

1998 Firebird Formula - 408 LQ9 Stroker motor swap and all sorts of go fast stuff
