A real disaster (or nor really??)

2000deville

Recommended Posts

It has started while driving my way back home from work tonight: at first on the right a traction control lamp came on, followed by a security system on the left; I saw “service theft control system” and “stability system” messages just afterwards. Than my speed control started to jump up and down; my fuel level reading disappeared completely; as well as my average MPG reading.

I arrived home, turned my engine off, and… never started again :(

After reading my codes (with the engine off, obviously), I have seen several U1000’s and U1016’s, posted for a different systems, as well as a few others that I had previously on.

What’s up?? Please, help…

Bad battery cables/contacts? Bad connections to computers?

battery seems to be OK -- its also a new one (one year old); where should I look for the computer connections?

It might be rather the battery CABLES and connections than the battery itself. There were many cases of hidden corrosion of the battery positive cable under the red insulation wher it connects to the battery. The computers are under the glove box.

The saddest thing in life is wasted talent

Pull the rear seat cushion and disconnect the battery negative cable from the body and inspect both the positive and negative battery terminals for corrosion / damage. Leave the negative cable disconnected.

Under the hood on the rear face of the fuse block under a red hinged cover is the major connection terminal for the positive battery cable, the starter power cable, and the alternator cable. Be certain all these cable ends are clean and bright and tight.

Back under the rear seat, inspect the battery negative cable end and the body connection point. Connect the negative cable to the body and battery, clear your codes and test drive.

It does definitely sound like some kind of bad ground connection somewhere... (on the battery or elsewhere).

Still no luck with starting my engine; I plugged the battery out, left this way for a few hours, plugged it back in, checked the connections... Perhaps there is something under the hood I have missed? Where else should I look for the ground connections??

Has the battery been load tested? If your battery is the original factory install, it could have just failed due to age and service.

Does the battery crank the engine at all? Or what happens when you turn the key to the start position?

You mentioned "U" codes and "a few others". What are the other codes?

I replaced my battery last September; it's a DELPHI BU-79-880 I'm using now. It gives me 12.2V as my computer reading is showing and still should be strong enough. I had no problems of any kind with it till this happened.

Now, when I turn the key to the ignition on position, I see all this controls on: ABS, BRAKE, TRACTION CONTROL, SERVICE ENGINE SOON. They stay on.

When I try to start the engine, I hear a few "clicks" under the hood on the driver side, Service Engine Soon is blinking, my fuel level and mileage are resetting themselves, and at the end I see SERVICE THEFT SYSTEM message. Looks like a key? But still, it makes those "clicks" on the starter when I try to start the engine.

The U1000 codes are appearing for most of the systems... I also see some U1016s...

The codes I had before is IPM B0429, which should not be related to this above. I also had PCM P0420, unrelated as well as I suppose.

One more hint: it has all began just after I hit a whole in the ground with my left front wheel while driving home that night. So I still believe something has just unplugged, somewhere...

I would try a replacement battery or have your battery load tested. No-load battery voltage does not tell you anything about the load handling capacity of the battery.
