Instrument cluster illumination '97 DeVille Concours

The instrument cluster of our 1997 DeVille Concours does not light up during daylight hours with the headlights off or on. It does, however, light up when the light sensor detects that dusk is approaching. If the light sensor on the dash is covered, the instrument cluster lights up. The cluster fuse in the trunk is good. Everything else seems to work fine. Any ideas/suggestions?

That is how it's supposed to work, it will not dim the gauges during daylight no matter what the position of the light switch.

Thanks for your prompt reply but I don't think you read my message or understood my problem. The instrument cluster has NO illumination during daylight other than the reflected light in the cabin. It doesn't seem to be the blubs because they do come on when it gets dark outside.

Oh sorry, do you have analog gauges? If so what do you mean you can't see the gauges at all or what is happening.

Yes. I have the analog guages. I can see the guages with "room" light but not very well if I go under a bridge or into a grove of trees, for example. I am aware that the guages should be fully illuminated and not dimable when driving in daylight. They aren't.

I'm not quite sure what the 97 Concours display looks like but what I am thinking is along the lines like a Lexus display where the display is backlighted and without those lights you can't see the display at all. If this is the case then there is a seperate bulb that lights that. If it bothers you I would just drive with the lights on then, or put something over the light sensor to trick it into thinking its dark all the time.

Well from looking at pics of 97 Deville Concours. The gauges are not illuminated with the headlights off, you should be able to see them in the daylight with no problem.

I can see the guages in the daylight just fine but not very well when going into temporary darkness like under a bridge or under dense trees. What's really strange is that turning on the headlights doesn't help - the instrument cluster lights do not come on unless it is dark enough outside to trigger the twilight sensor. There is also supposed to be a "parade" function that blocks the dimming control when using the headlights in daylight. I was hoping there might be a relay that has gone bad but the limited wiring diagrams I have don't show any logical points to attack.
