jlr7288
I own a 97 STS that has a left turn signal problem. The left signal flashes normally unless the headlights/park lamps are illuminated, which causes flasher to flash quickly or not at all. I have visually inspected the bulbs and they are all illuminated. Right side flasher works as designed. Any ideas?
MAC
Inspect all 3 left rear bulbs by taking them out and checking to see if the contacts are worn or flattened, and check the sockets. If the bulbs don't have a solid connection in the sockets it could cause fast signal flashing. Remove excess grease on the contacts.
MAC
One way you can try to diagnose the problem is to remove the tail light assembly and then turn the lights on so the signal flashes. Then giggle and/or press each bulb to see if the fast flashing stops. Sometimes you can diagnose the problem this way. If you remove the bulbs and see worn contact points you might as well just replace the bulb(s).
jlr7288
I have inspected bulbs front and rear and replaced bulbs with flattened contacts. I opened the harness on the left trunk hinge area and inspected wires, no breaks and while flexing the loom from side to side no change, I did notice that the third brake light on the deck lid is inop, not sure if that would affect this problem. epricedright
You don't want the contacts on the bulbs to be flattened. I'd replace the bulb in your 3rd brake light as well.
jlr7288
MAC-Your suggested diagnostic procedure was on the money. I found one socket that when pressed caused the flasher to flash normally. I pulled the wires from the pigtail, re-crimped the connectors and solved my dilemma. Thanks, Jim

I'll have to admit I was a bit skeptical about the giggling part but it appears that it does indeed work. I'm not sure I would want my buddies around when performing this procedure is all . Seriously, jlr7288 I'm glad Mac was able to direct you to the problem. JasonA
GM has a service socket for the 92-97 Sevilles that is apparently a slightly different design to help prevent corrosion. I replaced all four of mine in the decklid light housings about a year ago. The sockets in the outer housings hard mounted to the car haven't given me any problems yet.
